Hi

My name is Chad, I'm 23 and moving from Boston, MA to the UK in September.  My office is going to be in Windsor so i am wondering where is the best place to look for an apartment with a fairly easy commute to there, heathrow, and london.  Also any websites would be helpful in the apartment search as well.  Thanks.

What's up man, since we have the same first name and a similar commute I am obligated to post a reply in this thread, lol.

Seriously though, I am not in the UK as yet, but I have been doing a ton of research on West and Southwest London which is probably the same area you would want to live in, after looking at a map of where Windsor is in relation to London. I am also assuming that since you said commute, you mean you will be commuting from London.

My commute will be out to Marlow, which is about 10 miles further out than Windsor.

I have narrowed my choices down to these neighborhoods, in no particular order:
Clapham
Shepherd's Bush
Kensington
Chelsea

You can check out a thread I started here for more details, good luck fellow Chad.

I think it all depends on your budget and what you're looking for frome the area in which you live. Do you want lots of night life, or would you prefer to have access to the countryside? Do you want some place with a nice selection of shops and cafes, or does price trump all? How far are you willing to commute to work? Do you want to live in London?

Given the rather high rail fares, I'd rather be closer to work and within easy reach of Heathrow and London. Windsor offers that, but it can be pricey.

Hi there,

There's literally hundreds of areas and neighbourhoods all within easy commuting distance of Windsor - if you take a look at Google Maps/Microsoft maps/Yahoo maps you'll see there's a vast number of potentials within say a 20 mile radius.

The thing which sticks out like a sore thumb is what kind of budget are you willing or wanting to pay on finding a place to live? prices will vary from the very affordable to the utterly astronomical within this small geographic radius!

I guess that also depends on the disposable income you have each month and how much of it you allocate to housing/living costs.

The areas mention by the other Chad - Kensington and Chelsea, these are at the upper to higher desirable areas and rents match - Shepherds Bush is cheaper and so is Clapham. These are all areas towards central London proximity. If you come the other way, i.e away from central london and greater london, the trend is the less you'll pay. However there are pockets of areas where prices will be very much like Central London ! Windsor itself is a fairly pricey area, much the similar sort of level as say Kensington possibly. There's many many area I can name off the top of my head which would suit you - but best best would be to look at www.rightmove.co.uk - plug in that area and how much you'd like ot possibly spend and have a look at what comes back!

Good luck with everything and post up more as you discover stuff for the forum posters can help with!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

There are cheaper parts of Windsor too - eg Dedworth - but it's not as pretty and olde worlde. But it is tourist free and there's a huge Tesco.  ;D

Thanks everyone, i think i am going to look more around London. Kensington is a little out of my price range, i know because thats where i lived when i was abroad.  So any suggestions of other neighborhoods and rental websites would be helpful

Cheers

Hi
I lived in London and moved around every 3 months and I used Craig's List > London every single time. It was the best way for me to find either a single/studio or flat share. Met a lot of interesting people, some whom I still keep in contact with on facebook. There are never any fees and it is very fast paced, ie need a place to stay tonight or starting next Monday.  Plus I always got a good bargain that way.

cheers
