Hi Casawi

No idea what you're trying to suggest here..  NTSC signals aren't broadcast in Europe as far as I'm aware, so no point in plugging this dream box thingy!

I'm guessing - Are you saying the satellites locations you've given broadcast their signals in NTSC? and are those signals 'covering' the UK geographical location? and are those satellites broadcasting 'popular' US channels that ordinarily and popularly available/able to be picked up in the USA ?

Otherwise, please could you explain a little more clearly exactly what you're suggesting!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I'm not sure either.   ???

In order to watch NTSC in Europe you need a source of NTSC signal, the appropriate receiving or reproduction equipment, and a TV capable of displaying video in the requisite format.

Astra 2D is one the main direct-broadcast satellites for the U.K.   There are plenty of other satellites which can carry various NTSC newsfeeds and such like across the Atlantic.  But if we're talking about the satellites which are commonly used for direct-to-home reception of U.S. channels in America, their orbital positions place them out of range from the U.K., even from the farthest southwesterly point in Cornwall (which is why satellites used for U.K. to U.S. telephone links etc. are in mid-Atlantic orbits).

Most modern TVs will decode both signals and you probably wont have to make any manual setting changes.  You will have to figure out how to get the signal to your set though, the coax connection in you flat are only an aerial ("free" terrestrial signal) dont forget you TV license first.  UK uses SCART connections for cable/sat, you may find adapters but I plan to use my North American sets in the UK with voltage converters and HDMI connections.
To finish first first you must finish

I'd rather be lucky than good

UK uses SCART connections for cable/sat

Some sets now come only with SCART inputs (SCART being the method of physical connection, not any special electronic format as such -- the inputs are just component RGB and composite video), but many others can be found with S-video (Y/C) inputs, and independent color-difference inputs on RCA jacks for the direct connection of DVD players, etc.

Hmm, I am confused. I bought a brilliant new Phillips 50" flatscreen LCD last summer here in the States.

Will I be able to bring it to the UK and have it work? That would be AMAZING! What would I need to do?

Thanks all!

There are varying degrees of compatibility depending upon how you connect your signal sources to the set and what you want to use it for.   But first, there is the question of 120-volt U.S. power versus 240-volt British power.  If the set is switchable or has a certain type of power supply which will accept either, you can just plug it in with a new power cord or a plug adapter, otherwise you would need to run it through a step-down transformer to convert 240V to 120V.

Most modern sets will accept American or British format video signals connected directly via the component video inputs, either RGB or Y/Pr/Pb (sometimes called Y/Cr/Cb).  Many will also accept American NTSC or British PAL signals via S-video (Y/C) and composite video inputs, but you would need to check the specifications to be sure.   While much British domestic TV equipment these days uses the SCART connectors mentioned above, adapters to convert to RCA plugs are readily available.

Antenna-level connections are generally the least compatible, since the broadcast standards, channel allocations and so on are completely different.  Unless designed specifically for world markets, it's unlikely you would be able to use the antenna input and tuner for anything useful here.  Digital broadcast standards are also completely different.

Do you have the precise model number of your set?  If so, I might be able to find the specifications to be more precise.

Wow! You sound like you really know your stuff :)

I am currently at work but will check on exact model # when I get home this evening. My fiance actually posted this question to my user name so forgive me if he already responded directly to you and you have been in dialogue with him. I will write again this evening and we'll go from there.

I REALLY appreciate your help. We'd love to keep our TV but its far to large to bring all the way over there if we can't use it.

Thanks again and we'll chat again soon.

I posted a fair amount of background on TV standards in the Technical issues sticky thread here:

http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=12567.0

If you look through past threads on the electronics forum you'll find quite a few other related threads too which you might find useful, for example:

Great! Thank you. I'll have to sit down and go through the links with him tomorrow when he gets home and see if we can do this.

I looked at our TV and unfortunately I believe the exact model # is located on the back of the TV and I can't seem to move the TV to be able to read it at this time. Its huge and a  little too heavy for me to move. He'll be home tomorrow evening and I'll get him to get it for me.

Thanks again!!!

The box is very simple to understand , the output is as you see on the above picture.. no needed for SCART ...

Dreambox 's System is linux based OS and the output can be PAL + PAL 60 ... + NTSC
So you can use your NTSC Amercian  TV here to watch
BBC news, CCN , Carton Network , Disney , Nick ... on hotbird 13

>>I'm guessing - Are you saying the satellites locations you've given broadcast their signals in NTSC?

yes , I can watch TV on satellite Hotbird 13 for Europe ..

and are those signals 'covering' the UK geographical location?

you can download this software and put your location ,disk size ...etc. and you willl be able to see the list of channel avaiible in your area.

http://www.tele-satellite.com/cd/0902/eng/

>>and are those satellites broadcasting 'popular' US channels that ordinarily and popularly >>available/able to be picked up in the USA ?

I am able to see CNN int , FoxNews ...

Ah, so the unit has an integral standards converter?   Now I see what you're getting at.  Most modern TV sets will accept direct component video in 525/60 or 625/50 formats anyway.

I think you mean the Hotbird 6/7A/8 cluster at 13 degrees east.

Here are the channels available on those satellites:

http://www.lyngsat.com/hotbird.html

The "American" stations aren't the same versions as you will see in the U.S. though, e.g. CNN is the European version with regionalized inserts.

The signal strength from the Hotbird cluster is high enough to be receivable on the standard mini-dish throughout much of the U.K.

I do have another box without OS on it and I was able to see clear picture by switching
AV video to NTSC.

Today Bill show from my dreambox...

I was able to see all channels on availibe satillete in my areas in europe  like hotbird/Astra....etc. I can even watch now Sky sport 1,2,3 with Cardsharing..
The point here.. that you can use your NTSC TV in europe with satllte option..

I am trying now to move to HDTV using  dreambox  DM 8000 support multiple HDTV standards
with Video decoder:
Video Compression MPEG-2 / H.264 and MPEG-1 compatible
Video Standard PAL G/ 25 Hz, NTSC
Video Formats 4:3 / 16:9
Letterbox for 4:3 TV-Device
