410(k) transfer
« on: February 20, 2009, 09:55:51 AM »
I've worked in the US for a while and the 401(k) money is managed by Fidelity. Can it be transferred to UK. If I withdraw the money myself, first I have to pay income tax + there is a 10% penalty fee. Any idea how this works?

No - you cannot transfer the money to a non-US qualified plan.

I have absolutely no clue when it comes to my 401 K  but I am thinking that I have heard that you can roll it over into a IRA which I am wondering if you can transfer that to the UK.  I am in the same boat so if someone has info, that would be great!

It works exactly as you have written.  If you withdraw, you pay tax on it and a 10% penalty on top.  Your options are to leave it, rollover into another 401k plan or IRA or withdraw.

Guya has already posted that you cannot move to a non-US plan.  This applies for an IRA or 401k.

Hmm I too have a 401K type plan and I as thinking I just just transfer it to an IRA.. it should be okay sitting in a US bank cuz it shouldn't matter what country I am in as long as when I am of the proper age, I can prove that I am [me] right?
