Long Baby?
« on: June 11, 2004, 10:20:15 AM »

Philip was 25 inches long at 9 weeks old... is that long? In his little red book, it says he's in the 98th centil for height - so does that mean he's way above average, or still within average but a bit tall?  All the health visitors, etc keep commenting on how long he is, but it's hard for e to tell because I haven't laid him side by side with another baby. ;) All I know is that it's a real struggle to get him into clothes right now! When he was 9 weeks old, just over 2 months, he was fitting quite comfortably in 3-6 month clothing, lengthwise - but he *swims* in them in his arms & abdomen! Grrrr. I'm off this weekend to try to find him some shorts & trousers, because he can't wear any 1 piece romper-type outfits anymore, he busts out of the bottom but looks lost in the top.

Anyway - I'm looking online for height/length averages for babies & can't find anything.
Husband has lots of tall skinny people in his family - e wonder if Phili pwill be one of them. :D

Yes that does mean he is a bit tall for his age, but this in not always a bad thing just means he is going thru growth spurts. He will probly stop and become "averag" again soon.

My health visitor would look shocked each time she measured Niall.  Height in the 99th percentile and weight in the 91st percentile.  She said he was the biggest baby in her rounds and this certainly held true when buying clothes.

I've always had to buy Niall's clothes in a larger than age size.  Right now, he's just under 18 months and all of his clothes are 2 years +.   If we pick up winter clothes, we've been buying them in 3 years + because we know he'll be out of the 2 years by the beginning of Autumn.

By buying them in bigger sizes, I'm finding that I only have to shop for him twice a season.  Granted, they are a little large when you first get them, but within just a few weeks they are fitting better.

Dagmar was 23 1/2 inches long at birth, and she's continued to always be in the 98th(ish) percentile for height...for about 9 months she was actually several inches off the chart!

She's just tall, and we assume will continue to be, as dh is 6'2, his Dad is 6'2, his Mum is 5'11...I'm the oddity.  Guess she desn't take after me.   ;)

The chart is just averages...it just means Philip will be lucky enough to be the healthy, tall young man all the girls wanna date!

Emily was always in the 98th percentile when she was a baby and toddler.  She slowed down at about six or seven and at fifteen seems to have stopped growing at about 5'4".  The next one was always littler and I think will end up about the same height as Em.  The baby was a long baby and still seems tall for her age at 7.  So who knows.  :)

He's going to be a heartbreaker, I tell ya. He smiles at every single person who puts their face in his - he smiles at the ceiling - he seems to like the ladies behind the till at Boots the most...
