Primo PDF - anyone familiar with it?
« on: February 04, 2009, 02:55:59 PM »
My husband is, God willing(!), submitting his PhD Friday. But of course, he's got last minute things to sort out with the files before they are printed. He's home in Cumbria now, but will be traveling to Exeter tomorrow and will pull an all-nighter in the Uni computer labs finishing things up.

He needs to convert his Word doc into a PDF and then delete pages. The IT folks there tell him they have Primo PDF. Does anyone know if Primo PDF will allow you to delete pages or is it just a Reader? He won't need to edit elements on the page, just delete pages.

(Basically, he's creating 2 PDF files - one is the black and white section, the other will have the color diagrams with some text. Doing this is cheaper than printing the whole thing color.)

Any advice greatly appreciated!

I've never used the package, but looking at the software's website it appears that PrimoPDF is the basic package which is just a converter.  NitroPro appears to be needed to add editing facilities, available for download on 14-day trial:

Balmerhon,

Is he printing it himself or having it printed somewhere?

What about splitting his thesis into two separate Word files and then converting to PDF?

Might there be issue with pagination?

That's just what I was about to suggest :P.

I guess the only thing he'd have to worry about with doing that would be making sure that he could keep all the page numbers and chapter headings in the right places for when the B&W and colour pages are put back together for binding.

I had this trouble last year when I was trying to print and bind my masters thesis - I ended up using www.mythesis.co.uk for the final hardbound submission - they printed (both the colour and B&W pages), bound and shipped it to my parents' house (I was in the US at the time) for about £30 a copy.

I was actually thinking that if your husband is printing it himself, almost any printer now will allow you to select which pages you want printed. So in one pass, print all the pages you want in color and in the second pass, do black and white.

However, if he's getting it printer elsewhere like a shop of some kind, they might not want to fiddle with that (although I'm not sure why they wouldn't.)

His thesis is over 350 pages with about 150 color pages scattered throughout. By converting the file to a PDF first and then having 2 copies of that, one with the black and white pages, one with the color pages, he shouldn't have pagination issues (he'll collate the pages himself, then have it spiral bound). He is having it printed at the Uni print shop. Mort, your idea is the last resort as these places seem to be resistant to specifiying pages for some reason (time I assume, and prob added cost to him).

Ksand, that might work for his final submission, thanks for the link.

Try CutePDF. It's "FREE for personal, commercial, gov or edu use" and will allow him to convert Word Docs to pdf form, then delete pages. The results are readable by any PDF software.

I'm a fan of PDFCreator.  It's clean (from spyware, etc) and free.

Thanks everyone. I think we're sorted now!
