Good way to send small sums to US?
« on: February 16, 2009, 11:48:08 AM »
I was talking to one of my friends I used to work with back in the States and she was saying that anything we ever want sent over, she'd be happy to pick up and send us, especially after hearing what some U.S Importers charge over here.

Does anyone know of a good way of sending small amounts (like $20-$30 at a time) to her? Although we're good friends, I feel a bit awkward asking her for her bank account details, I suggested paypal she has been burned on paypal after someone scammed her on Ebay (luckily for a small amount) and paypal sided with the scammer so she refuses to use them ever again.

Ideally I'd love for a service where I could just make a credit card payment and they send her a cheque but I can't seem to find any service like that, there's always Western Union but that would mean making her trudge over to her nearest WU place when shes already doing me a favour.

I also thought about maying just buying one of those VISA gift cards but again they don't seem to like people buying those with none-US credit cards to be sent to someone in the U.S, presumably because of fraud.

Are there any other services that anyone can think of? Obviously I could just send her some bills in the post or get a foreign cheque drawn up but ideally I'd prefer something online and quicker.

I send money to my dad for the care of my cats via paypal (even though I absolutely HATE using them). They seem to be the least expensive for those small amounts of money. Hardly seems worth the outrageous fee via moneygram or Western Union otherwise.

Sorry, wish I knew an alternative to suggest -- as I would like to know as well.

I have not checked into the actual fees involved with it, but it is another option if they refuse to use paypal.
I have been burned by paypal too, they sided with the scammer!
Let us know if it is good, then we can all start using it.
I wonder if it works with ASDA too.
Good luck
Haikus are easy.
But sometimes they don't make sense.

Sorry just read some of the rules in the fine print.  Money gram will do it from their site, but it looks like you have to walk in to a walmart to use them.  Again, it might work with ASDA so you can ask them maybe.
Sorry, not sure I was any help at all.

Well my work's webfilter blocks Walmart (I like to think for Moral reasons rather than content  ;D) but I shall take a look at that and see what I can find out.
