There is actually at least one region of India where they don't eat onions or garlic, they use asafoetida powder for the taste instead. Maybe find some recipies that use that instead?

So, we went to Tesco today and checked once again all the Indian pre-mixed spice mixes and on the top shelf they had Fiddes Payne brand of spices at a steep discount (discontinued items, I think). After checking and re-checking, we found Authentic Garam Masala (Ingredients: Cumin, Cloves, Corinander, Cassia, all Spice, Cardamon) and Authentic Tikka Curry Powder (Ingredients: Cumin, Paprika, Coriander, Cardamon, Cloves, Cinnamon, Salt, Fenugreek Leaves)

Yay!  Can't wait to try them out!
