Slumdog Millionnarie film poster
« on: February 27, 2009, 08:39:31 PM »
While I was recently visiting, I noticed the film posters for Slumdog Millionnaire are different in the US and the UK.

This is the US version I've seen:

In my most recent visit to the UK, this was really the only thing I saw advertised in a completely different manner. I just thought it was pretty funny that it seems to be marketed completely differently. "A buoyant hymn to life, and a movie to celebrate." (US) vs.  "The feel good movie of the decade!" (UK)?

What do you think?

Hm.  Maybe that's why my (UK) MiL and FiL walked out on it!  They said it did NOT make them feel good.  Not having seen it myself (yet!), I can't say anything either way.  But I noticed it's playing in my cheap-o hometown theater.  Maybe I'll go see it at the weekend.

I thought (but could be completely wrong) that the top poster you've shown is the newer version, rather than the US-specific version. I saw Slumdog a couple of weeks ago but can't for the life of me remember which poster was outside the cinema.

I'll admit its not much of a "feel good" type of movie, although I personally found most bits pretty enjoyable and very interesting. Anyway, I didn't leave the movie theatre feeling depressed or anything. Also the soundtrack is to die for!

Edited to add: Maybe your FIL and MIL should have stuck around purely for the Bollywood dancing after the credits :-D that part was DEFINITELY feel-good! Makes me want to learn!

The only other Indian movie I've seen with Bollywood dancing is Devdas, which was pretty serious most of the time and definitely not feel-good. But oh so epic and beautiful. I recommend that movie to anyone!

They walked out!  Gosh!

I do think that the 'feel good' aspect was overplayed...it certainly has feel good aspects, and (I don't think this is a spoiler) a feel good ending, but much of the rest of it is pretty gritty and brutal.

I think the dancing at the end is part Bollywood, part other things.... Bollywood dancing doesnt have men and women touching each other....there seemed to be a lot of salsa moves in the JAI HO dance at the end... definitely worth waiting for! Still the best thing ive seen in a long time. But not feel good.

I've seen the 'Feel Good Movie of the Decade' poster on buses all over Newcastle, and, while I really liked Slumdog Millionaire, it was definitely not a feel good movie. A happy ending (of sorts-SPOILER- even the happy ending came with a violent death!-SPOILER) but most of it made me feel decidedly not good. A very weird marketing campaign, and misleading, IMO.
If we called them Sad Meals, no one would buy them.
