Has anybody else seen this show or heard about this guy?

Americans are telling him to move back to Briton but do we really want him back?!  :P

I've not heard about this guy until now, but I've seen a couple of episodes of Wife Swap over the years (though I'm ashamed to say it!) and the show is absolutely foul.  It's as heavily scripted as an episode of Jerry Springer and thrives on showing caricatures of real people conforming to ridiculous stereotypes and tossing around cliched insults.  I highly doubt that, had this man been born American rather than a naturalised Brit, the furor over his comments would have reached such a level.

I think you're probably right Meg.  I hope the show paid well, because it looks like his performance has made quite an impact.

As much as I can understand that he was probably pushed a bit to make the show more dramatic, I've lived in the SF Bay Area most of my life and I've met PLENTY of people just like the Fowlers.

Living in AMERICA most of my life, I've (unfortunately) met plenty of people like the Fowlers - which is why I made the statement above.  :-\\\\  I'm not saying that Fowler has been innocently manipulated by the show - rather, that his nationality has played a large role in why his comments and opinions - which are unfortunately shared by many Americans across the country - have gained such traction.

I feel that Stephen Fowler is by far the worst husband I've ever seen on any 'wifeswap' episode, and I admit that the show is a guilty pleasure of mine. There are only one or two other husbands/wives that made me really angry, but even they were tame by comparison.

I find the backlash justified towards Stephen Fowler. I think he's an idiot and it came out loud and clear throughout the episode. He continuously insulted a kind, soft-spoken woman for no other reason than that he felt she wasn't good enough to deserve even the most basic courtesy. The fact that he immigrated to the US and became very successful (living the American dream)just makes him look even more pompous and ungrateful, which will make Americans even more angry.

I'll defer to your Wife Swap expertise on the matter of other odious participants, as I've only ever seen two episodes (and Foster's wasn't one of them) - and frankly I feel like those are two hours that I'll never get back.  ;D

This is the same point I'm making.  I'm not excusing his behaviour - far from it! - but I feel that the backlash has been more severe, and lasted longer, than it would have for an American who had acted in such a manner and expressed such sentiments.  I feel that anyone who behaves as Foster did - regardless of nationality, regardless of whether or not the behaviour took place on national television or in the privacy of one's own home - deserves whatever's coming to them.  Golden rule and all that.

I can't help but watch the trainwreck ;D

You know, it's possible that the producers told him to ham it up so he could become the next 'Simon Cowell' or something silly like that. If that's the case, I can't believe he fell for it!!

I've listened to the show when I was working around the house.  I made the mistake of watching this episode.  Mr. Fowler was mean and rude, regardless of his nationality.

I don't think any nationality has cornered the market on mean and rude, but do feel Mr. Fowler brought this wrath upon himself.  He didn't look uneasy about how badly he treated that poor woman.
