What have people's experiences been with SMS? I've been looking at reviews on review centre and there are a lot of very bad reviews. Am I better off with second class mail for my supporting documents?

They are terrible.  Really, really bad.  They have been working on Home Office stuff for some time, since the last post office strike, and I have had some really bad experiences.  One poor client had to wait 6 weeks for his documents to be delivered because of their innefficiency -

1) first time, claimed no one was around to sign for the package, even though our reception is manned 24 hours, and they didn't send a card

2) second time, sent a card, but obviously hadn't tried to deliver

3) third time (my personal favourite) refused to leave the package as it was addressed to 'Medivisas', and clearly my name is not 'Medivisas'

4) finally got it, six weeks later, having been left in reception without even requesting a signature.

I would rather use the post.  I'd rather use a pigeon.

Vicky

Well, I have no choice about my UK passport, it has to go by Secure Delivery, but I suppose I could have my US passport returned by second class mail.

I am just worried that if my US passport gets lost and I use 2nd class mail, I will have no way to trace it.

And if it is second class mail, nobody will need to sign for it either.

As I said earlier, I have no other photo ID besides my US passport (and my UK passport when I get it eventually); I really don't want it to go missing. And I might also want to go the US sometime.

So far, Vicky, based on what you've said, I think I'll go with the Post Office for my US passport, although I'm still paranoid.

They will send it recorded, won't they?

Just my 2 cents..

DH just applied to renew his passport. He used Check and Send and paid for secure delivery of his documents (his soon to expire current passport).
It was returned last week, cancelled (the front corners cut off) in an envelope with no postmark, with a pre-printed address label, and simply put through the letter slot.
His new passport arrived today, and was simply pushed through the letter slot.
Nothing had to be signed for.
I have to say, he applied on Valentine's day and got the new passport today so that's a super quick turnaround.
Good things come to those who wait...a really long time.

Well, thanks all but it looks like I may delay getting a passport see my thread in On the Job.

My referee just signed my application for me too.
