It's not that long ago that most pubs closed at 10:30 p.m.

Is that right? How not long ago was that as I only recall them closing at 10:30pm on Sundays, 11pm rest of the week.

It used to be 10.30 every night in the City And County Of Bristol; I remember the excitement when we got an extra half hour on Saturdays. The local paper predicted the end of the world.

Didn't the government extend the permissible licensing time to 11 p.m. but still leave it open for 10:30 p.m. to be retained locally if councils so decreed?   I was never much of a "pub person," but as far as I can recall I'm sure the pub in the village where I lived in the 1980s (Cornwall) always closed at 10:30.

Well when you are trapped there, I suppose they have to keep you entertained somehow.  :P
