Militay & State Dept. brats + anyone who has moved alot
« on: March 07, 2009, 02:22:18 AM »
For y'all that have spent your childhood moving around, where do you say you are from in the States when UK people ask about your origins?  I could say the state I was born in but I don't consider it home.  Matter of fact, I'm not attached to any particular state.  I have very fond memories of each state that I have lived in but none stands out more than the rest.

I answer with all different answers, every now and then it gets me in trouble.... those who know me, know I moved a fair amount but with strangers it can get confusing.  Just depends on what we are talking about.

I usually say VA "right now" because it's where my parents are and where I went to Uni.

Other than that I usually answer that I was a military kid and leave it at that.:)
Like now when I really live in VA, but I'm not from around these parts if that makes sense!

In the UK most people understood the military lifestyle thing.

I understand what you guys are are saying but I have run in to quite a few people (often who've been in the same place most of their lives) that want to place you in some geographical context.  When I lived in Massachusetts, most of the people had lived there forever and even divided themselves amongst towns.  They could tell I was a 'foreigner' and wanted to identify me by a certain geographical place. I said Maryland (the last place I had lived at the time) to make them happy.  But I only went to college there and was never all that emotionally attached to it.

I moved alot when I was a kid. I don't really consider myself "from" anywhere.

I just say either I moved here from X

or

I was born in X, but didn't stay there long

Good Question- My dad once overheard me say I was from nowhere, he corrected me and said I was from everywhere. He is right, that sounds a lot better! I spent the last 10 years in Pennsylvania before moving to England that is the answer I give initially. If the conversation goes on I explain that my family is all over and I lived all over most of life.

I usually say, "My dad was in the military, so we moved around a lot, but I went to high school and college in Texas, and that's where my family still lives, so that's where I call home."  That seems to satisfy everyone.  :)

I usually say Nebraska even though my family moved away when I was 6.  My extended family all live there and we are very close.  I will also usually add that I haven't lived there for many years and that when we travel back to the US we go to Phoenix as that is where my parents are now living.  Have been visiting them there for 19 years.  I also add that I grew up as an expat so home is where I am at the moment.

I moved countries when I was a kid (my parents are immigrants from the Caribbean who moved to the US 17 years ago, so I've been an immigrant myself since I was 7), so "Where are you from" is a bit of a difficult question for me!  I usually say I'm from Texas, which is where I have lived the longest, but I'm also from my home country as well, so if it's a real conversation and not just small talk I'll tell the person where I'm originally from as well. :)

I was born on a military base in Germany and moved around the world through my dad's military assignments, but California has been home the longest, as this is where my parents retired when I was in my later teens. I also have childhood memories here as my dad was stationed on 2 military bases in California while I was little.
