Anyone in Sheffield?
« on: March 06, 2009, 09:34:52 PM »
What are the nicer bits to live in, or the bits to avoid? How about nearby towns and villages?

I have an impression of it as being a fairly dreary city, but I have recently heard thigns that suggest I might be very wrong about this. What are your impressions, both positive and negative?

My boyfriend is in Sheffield this minute, drinking in the Devonshire Cat.
But i dont expect that helps you, except to know they've got good beer in Sheffield!

I've never been, but saw it on Location, Location, Location, and it didn't look dreary at all.

I had a, erm, friend from Sheffield.

It's definitely not cheap.  That's a bit of a misconception.

Didn't you post almost this same topic last year? :)

As pretty much everyone knows, I live in Sheffield and love it- perhaps it used to be dreary in the past when it was more industrial, but that's certainly not the case now, at least in my opinion.

It's definitely not cheap.  That's a bit of a misconception.

It really depends on what area you're living in & what your standard of living is - same as any other city.  Where I live its reasonably priced but I live in an old mining village...  A 2-bed semi can get anywhere from 80-120k in our village alone, depending on condition and location within the village.  Neighbouring villages can go higher as they're "more exclusive" / commuter.

Sheffield itself is a really friendly city, but nothing on size and hum of London.

Personally I'd avoid Gleadless, Manor / Manor Top, Darnall areas, as they tend to be rougher.  We live in a country village on the outskirsts bordering on Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire.  We're postally classed as Sheffield, but council classed as Rotherham.  It suits us fine.

How busy are you wanting your home area to be?  Are you looking for more urban with minimal commute into the city?  Trains? (we have 2 trainstops in our village - approx 20-25 minutes by train into Sheffield, 15-20 minute drive into Sheffield at a non-busy time).  Bear in mind with Sheffield there is no traffic bypass, so all traffic has to go through Sheffield...  We're relatively close to the motorway too, so again we've got access to pretty much everything at hand.

PM me if you want more info, as I'm not posting more details than this on a public forum.

My husband and I live in S11. He has told me on more than one occasion that as one point this was voted the best postcode to live in in all of England. He may be exaggerating, he may be making it up, who knows? It is nice though, we live on a farily quiet street and there always kids playing outside.

He also tells me it it the greenest city in England. He may just be trying to get me to like it more though ;)

hey neighbour! We're not in S11, but fairly close, nearish to Nether Edge. :)

Sheffield is the greenest city in England, that's true!  That's one thing I love about it, there's so much green space and parks aroud.

Yay! I love hearing things like that, it makes me feel less alone and a million miles from home :)
