Can I live in a council house on a student visa?
« on: April 01, 2009, 02:11:55 AM »
Hello all,

Feel free to move this if need be. My question over-laps a few topics so I couldn't decide which would be best to post it in.

I plan on studying abroad in the UK (N Ireland) for six months next year (Spring Semester, 2010).   My boyfriend, who currently lives at home, plans on moving out before I study abroad.  He really wants us to live together for those six months that we're in the same country.  Basically, because we want to see if we can last for six months before killing each other so that we know if we should pursue the whole fiance/spouse visa thing in the future.

He hasn't really started the house hunt yet, but is considering looking into getting a Council House.  I don't know the technicalities of his disability on a legal/governmental level.  He has severe Asthma which prevents him from walking more than about a hundred feet before he's totally out of breath.  He has also been getting Motability cars since he was young.

He will either be working or will be a phd student while I'm abroad (depending on how the acceptance to the uni goes).

This is getting lengthy, but I guess you can see my question evolving. haha.

We would like to co-habitate for the six months that I'm in Northern Ireland. I have volunteered to pay half of any rent he may have while I'm there, but he has said it's not necessary and he'd be willing to put me up while I'm there (in return for cooking and cleaning, of course  ::)  )

1. Will I be asked on my visa application where i plan on living? Will I need to submit proof of my housing? Will they have an issue with me being allowed to stay in my boyfriend's house for free?  Will that look dodgy to them?

2. In the event that he does get a council house, would I even be able to stay there as a long-term guest since we're not legally married or anything like that?

Thanks!  Sorry this is so bloody long... :-\\\\

Quite simply, tenants of a Council House are entitled to have guests staying at their place. You moving in for a temporary period of time will not cause a problem.

And while staying there will be no problem you contributing to household expenses.
