Safest & Riskiest places to live in England & Wales!
« on: April 02, 2009, 01:08:01 PM »
Hi all,

Here's an article about the riskiest and safest places to live in the UK England & Wales in terms of insurance payouts, includes various aspects including flood risk and burglary risk and utilizes data from various reputable sources.

http://money.uk.msn.com/insurance/article.aspx?cp-documentid=15607850&gt1=63251

A few 'eyebrow' raisers in terms of expecting what is more and less risky!

Should be a good resource for anyone shortlisting places to live when coming in from abroad to help in their evaluations.

ETA - Fixed!!! ;)

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I just looked at the link because I figured Reading would be one of the worst and it was. We never had our house broken into but we did have two cars vandalized, one beyond repair.  >:(

Most definitely!    Hackney & Tower Hamlets are in the top 10 safest places while not a single rural area gets a mention?   I can't help feeling that the criteria used to determine these rankings of overall "safeness" are highly suspect.

It's on insurance payouts and includes flooding, which probably explains a lot.
One flood event can result in hundreds of payouts and far more per payout than for a robbery in Tower Hamlets for example.

I suppose the reference to data from police authorities is only in relation to things like burglary then, which seems to fit with the rest of the article revolving around just insurance.

I think when debating how safe or risky an area is, most people would probably be inclined to include things like the chances of getting mugged or stabbed in the street.

Hmm... I lived in Leeds for a year. Next to one of the poorest neighborhoods, called Little London. I do have to say I felt unsafe at night, the kids living over Little London were really aggressive. During our few night parties, we had a couple of girls beat up and mugged by those kids.

People in Leeds say that crime is high due to the large population of students- and burglars knowing how distracted they are. So it's easy to get inside the houses and steal what ever they want.

I think it's a mistake to overgeneralise about any particular city - every place is going to have good and not so good neighbourhoods.

I live in suburban Leeds & have never felt safer in my adult life than I do here - but our town is a pretty nice working class (not too posh) 'burb.  Your mileage may vary.  :)

I would have thought there'd be massive flood risks in the Severn Valley around Glousteshire, isn't it a huge flood plain?  Then again, I'd guess low crime maybe cancelled it out somewhat.  It would have been interesting to see they 5 or 10 factors or however many to show how they did against each criteria.

One thing I know, where we are on a hill up from a bigger hill, there's no chance of a flood coming through here unless I see Noah's Arc pass by.  ;D
