Flying the flag
« on: May 29, 2004, 08:26:18 PM »
Well as memorial day is here and the fourth of July is far away my girlfriend from home sent me a flag pole and house mounting because she knew I didn't have one.

When we lived in the states I would fly the flag all the time and alternate when I flew the US and when I flew the UK flag.  I noticed that people aren't into flying the Union Jack and usually only see a football flag or St. George's cross.  I liked flying the flag in the states and would like to do it here for me and especially for my kids.

What do you think the reception would be to this?  I don't really know the neighbors yet or many people for that matter.  Don't want to ruffle any feathers.

I put the flag up every year for the fourth and more recently for September 11.  I've never had anything but good comments and in fact find it to be a conversation starter with neighbours I don't know.  Loads of times I've met people and when I describe where we live, they say 'oh, you're the house with American flag!'  I say, if it makes you happy, do it.   :)

I also in fairness put the Union Jack out for the Golden Jubilee and am going to Homebase tomorrow to get some red and white geraniums to go in the window box with the England flag.   :)

I've just posted this elsewhere, but I was under some very vague impression that you actually had to have permission to fly the Union Jack. I could well be wrong... I thought I had also heard that this regulation was lifted during the Golden Jubilee. Not sure how accurate this is, or if it's true, how well regulated.

OK, ignore some of the above. Just found this link which tells you how to fly it right side up! as well as where the permission thing came from.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Mindy, does your family do the fireworks in town on the Fourth!?  I remember being so blue on the day last year and all of a sudden I heard then saw fireworks.  It made me so happy!!!!

We don't, but there are so many Americans around that you almost always  hear or see some.  And they're widely available.  We have too tiny a garden and would probably take an eye out knowing us.   :)

we don't get very excited about the flag in this country and most people wouldn't bother flying one. However there is no legal barrier to doing so if you want to. Flagstaffs wouldn't need planning permission, unless they were huge things.

When i first moved in with my boyfriend now hubby we bought miniature flags a union jack and american flag...i stuck them in our hanging basket in front of the house...we lived in a terraced house so we had plenty of neighbors...one day we overheard the mailman talking to one of our neighbors...since you could hear loads in these houses - he thought it was cute that we had both flags out...ahhh made me smile :)

During the last World Cup we flew our Stars and Stripes and St. George Cross.  It was fine.  No problems whatsoever.
I'm sorry.  I'm just not cool.
