What do I need to know for visitng?
« on: February 25, 2009, 01:40:33 AM »
I am thinking of flying to England to visit my fiance for three or four weeks.  He has been living in a council house since the beginning of the year, and I just want to find out if having a short term guest is going to lead to any trouble.  He did ask someone, but was only told that he would have to prove that he would NOT be receiving any monies from me during my stay.  How do you prove that your not getting money?  Has anyone gone through a similar situation, and can maybe offer some advise?  Thanks   :)

I think you'll be okay as long as you're just visiting, as far as I know. My fiance's ex-wife lives in a council house, and she had her BF (now husband) from Texas stay with her for a couple months at a stretch before they sorted their own visa issues out. I didn't hear about them having to do anything special that I know of. I'm not entirely sure how you'd prove you *weren't* giving him money for accommodation, but I think you'll be alright :)

If I'm wrong and there is some special rule that has to be followed, I'm sure someone will correct me :P

No advice here, but I know that JohnL here on the forum is a whiz with benefits questions re: what is legal and what isn't - you may want to PM him. :)

You will be fine. I imagine what he was told was that he cannot accept any extra benefit/money/public funds on your behalf (for you) while you are there.

However, that being said, be sure to read up on what kind of documents you may want to take with you to show to the IO at the airport when you arrive.  You will need to prove that you intend to leave after the 3-4 weeks and that you can support yourself while you are visiting.

And don't tell the IO you're visiting a friend. :) Enjoy your trip.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"
