I can take university level classes on a fiance visa?? I didn't think I could! I'd love to take online classes toward a master's or certificate, or do that teaching taster course that Jewlz was talking about. Wow, thank you for that info! One reason I decided against studying in England was because tuition is much cheaper when you're a resident, but I thought that meant I had to have a spousal visa first. Interesting...

Oh well its still expensive- you're just allowed to do it.  You won't get resident tuition fees until you're here for 3 years.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

You're stuck with me!

There are some "colleges" I think, not universities, where you can get local rates. You should check your local community centre, which might offer some that work toward what I assume would be the equivalent of an Associate's degree. I looked into it, and found I could get a teaching assistant diploma at a local rate, but a teaching degree had to come from a university, which was gonna cost 3 times as much unless I waited for the 3 years. The teaching assistant degree might be an option for you, as it would help you get classroom experience while you study for your teaching degree later on. Good luck!

I already have a Bachelor's degree in psychology, I was looking into getting a Master's in psych or teaching. The school that I was looking into, the University of East London, just has categories for "UK/EU students" and "Overseas students," so I'll have to email them to see which rate applies to me when I am in the UK but not a resident yet. It's half the price if I get the UK/EU price, so if I have to wait 3 years for that it's worth it!

For deffo. You would be considered an overseas or international student. I looked into getting a teaching certificate or a second master's, but it was about 3 times the price if I were to do it now as opposed to waiting the three years. I decided it was best to wait. But if you could find some of those taster courses, you could look into some stuff or at least learn something knew while you sit around on your todd.  :P  I seriously would've taken that forensics taster course for fun because I love watching Cold Case and stuff like that. And they usually are more than one class - like a 3 day course or something like that. It would be fun to experiment!  :)

Yeah, you'll definitely have to wait until you have been in the UK for 3 years before you can qualify for the UK/EU fees... even UK citizens who have not been ordinarily resident in the UK/EU for the past 3 years are subject to international fees. Unfortunately, if you wanted to study before the 3 years are up, you'd be looking at somewhere between £8,000 and £15,000 a year for international fees compared to about £3,000 or so for UK fees after 3 years  :-\\\\!

Yeah, the program I want to do is about 9000 quid for overseas and about 4500 for UK/EU. However, it's WAY cheaper than the same program at UPenn, which is $45,000, so I might suck it up and pay the extra, depending on how long my boy and I decide to stay in the UK (since we eventually want to move back to the US).

If you don't want to wait three years, now is a pretty good time to study in the UK as a US student, financially speaking... because you won't have to take out quite as much in US student loans or spend as much US funds due to the exchange rate.  Especially if your fiance/husband can cover living expenses.

How does that work for applying for uni?  It's been suggested to me that I look into getting my Masters at Lincoln (to get me here sooner!) and Tim said we'd figure out a way to pay the int'l rates, but I was under the impression when you apply you need to show money up front to cover housing. If you're going to stay with your partner, how would you show you don't need housing money?

you would need Tim to write a letter saying that he will help support you financially while you're studying, and back that up with his bank statements/payslips. At least that's how it worked for the old student visa system- as you'd be applying under the new Tier 4 scheme, there's some very clear guidance on the UKBA website you can refer to as to what is and is not acceptable as proof of funds for students.

edit: that's just for the visa, btw.  My university didn't require me to provide any financial information before they would unconditionally accept me- most don't, they just need to know you plan on self-funding. (My comment that you quoted was mostly aimed at people who are already in the UK on fiance/spousal visas and as such don't need a student visa, but plenty of students come over to the UK on student visas and end up living with their UK partners.)

It's really tempting to look into this....even though it would wind up being hellishly expensive in the long run.

We're in North Devon so I'm in the same position. I'm really good with finding my way around so after my first visit I knew how to get places on foot or on the Bus. Is there a bus system that goes all around the towns near you?

I usually do the laundry, cleaning or dinner prep. I check to see who in the US is awake and online so we can talk for free. I take the bus to ASDA and back. Sometimes I take the bus to his parents and hang out with his Mum, but I don't know if you're close to his parents. I'll walk to the Quay or walk around the town centre and window shop. I'll take his parents dogs for a walk or to the beach because I love the pups so much. I usually also use this time to see a film at the cinema that DF isn't that into.

As much as I hate to admit this, I also do a good bit of napping because I love to sleep and when I'm in the US I don't get to do it very much. Hope this helps a little.
