As long as the visitor returns to their home country after the marriage, it's ok to then apply to come to the UK. It's just not allowed to transition directly.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012
FINALLY A CITIZEN! 29/2/2012

Hold on here... a marriage visitors visa (MVV) is not intended for those who want to settle in the UK. It is meant for those who want a destination wedding and then return to their home country.  When you applied for this visa, did you apply under the assumption that the two of you would be moving to the US after the wedding?

No we applied for it because at the time there was no intent for her to remain in the UK. She will return to the US after the wedding as per the visa requirements and then we will apply for her right to move over here. There is no intention to stay immediately after the wedding or attempt to adjust status from it while she is here.
