I actually was reduced to making Graham crackers at one point.  Not really anything like Nabisco but they were OK.  I would make apple sauce from scratch too which was very nice but not like Mott's.  (Sometimes when you're a little off a bowl of Mott's is just what you need -- nice and bland)  Part of the allure of these comfort foods is the convenience factor.  Its just more comforting to open a packet or a jar and there it is!

I agree with the whole convenience factor thing, but after so long of living in the united states, you get accustomed to these foods and the draw from the convenience is lost, and it just becomes a food that you have to have.

The ranch dressing is great b/c I can store it in a large mason jar, and just spoon it out when I need it. It lasts a long time. I guess applesauce wouldn't last long (would it??) but homemade is a great idea!
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!

Yes, I would do that too.  Also froze it in ice cube trays for the kids when they were babies.
