Swine flu-pregnant and flying to the USA
« on: April 30, 2009, 09:36:12 PM »
I'm flying to the USA on 14 May to go to the midwest (MN,IA,KS).  Normally I don't freak out about health-related stuff like swine flu but I'm 21 weeks pregnant and a bit worried what it means for treatment, if I'm more susceptible, etc. Where I work has a plasma screen with BBC news 24 and the updates don't help!

I guess what I'm asking is-would any of you that are pregnant (or have been) still travel/fly? It's basically the last trip back to the USA pre-baby, and the next trip won't be for awhile, but it isn't the end of the world if I don't go.  I'll have travel insurance and from what I could tell from the Foreign Office, this is only null and void if they issue a ban for the USA (seems very unlikely.)

Thanks for any suggestions (easing of fears, etc!)
Katie
ps. The thread on what it was like to be pregnant in the UK was fantastic-really great to hear such positive experiences.

Right now there are only 100 confirmed cases here in the US and, if I recall correctly, all of the cases are from people who have been to Mexico recently. Right now you are at no greater risk than catching the regular flu or cold, or any other illness if you are pregnant. The problem with it is just that it's a new strain that there is no vaccine and no immunity. If you are worried, check with your doctor about good hand sanitizers that would be anti-viral and check to see if s/he feels it is safe.

The plane is the part I would worry most about since you're in a confined space, but I'm sure your airline will be happy to talk to you about precautions.

Like Belita says, at this moment you're about as likely to catch this as you would the regular seasonal flu; definitely call your GP to get his or her advice, and take hand sanitizers and wipes with you (you can wipe down the plastic portions of the armrest with the wipes). My fiance called his GP to ask about traveling to the US (he'll be here a few days after you fly in, actually) because he's immune suppressed due to Crohn's and the medication he takes for it, and she told him she'd only advise against going to Mexico, not the US. She basically just said to wash his hands, and to be aware of his overall health for a few days after getting here.

i'd just make sure you have trip insurance so if you do feel ill while you're here, you are able to go to a doctor!  but like others have said, i think it's the same risks as getting the regular flu...
