A bit last minute, but I'm looking for recommendations for pubs with good food in the above areas - my sister is in town and we're going to do the Stockton-Helmsley-Pickering-Scarborough-Whitby-Stockton route tomorrow (or Tuesday, or Wednesday) and the Stockton-Keswick-Carlisle-Hexham-Wallsend-Stockton route Tuesday (or tomorrow, or Wednesday) - anyone have a place to recommend?

Thanks in advance! :)

I really don't know the area, but for a great pub search engine go to www.beerintheevening.com

Helmsley - there's a couple of really good pubs on the main square there - we went in one last November and it was really good, big portions - I had a delicious home made steak pie.
Checking online, on the square is the Black Swan, The Feathers and The Crown. Wewent in the Feathers, but looked at the other menus and they all looked good serving similar stuff.

We were in the area for the Cropton beer festival - at the New Inn, Cropton, serve their own ales and they do food as well.

Thanks so much, TykeMan!  We did our Keswick trip today and wound up at the George Hotel for lunch - I had the most massive steak and ale pie that I've ever seen, and that was the HALF portion!  :o  We're heading south tomorrow and will definitely check out The Feathers. ;D

Vicky, I checked beerintheevening but the site does seem to skew more towards drink than food reviews - still, a good resource!
