PhD scholarship and FLR
« on: March 26, 2009, 07:18:27 AM »
Hi all!

Just wondering if somebody could help me out with this. Once I go through the whole getting the IRL (after 5 years, right?), could I start applying for a UK-based scholarship for a PhD? My long term plan is to get my PhD and hopefully get to teach afterwards.

I'm just a bit worried since fees for international student are so high... will be nice to know if I'll need to start saving up for my PhD.

Thanks!

current requirements for home fees is 3 yrs residence + permanent residence (ILR)...but by the time you get to that stage the law will probably be changed so that you have apply for something called probationary citizenship instead (Quite likely not a qualifying status for home fees.) so the wait might be a bit longer than you think.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Does PhD funding count the same?

It does if you're going for a PhD through the Arts Council. I'm not sure about other funding bodies, but I'm guessing it's similar.
If we called them Sad Meals, no one would buy them.

Hmmm... so, let see if I got it right. I need to wait for more then 5 year to get a UK-based scholarship? For example from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)?

Will I be better if I save up? Oh, I will be married to a UK Citizen by then. So I don't know if this could change my possibilities.

Thanks all.

Yeah, NERC will only award funding to UK citizens or EU citizens who have lived in the UK for at least 3 years. I'm not sure about the other research councils, but to qualify for a NERC scholarship, you would have to be a UK citizen.

Ok, got you guys, thanks. I hope that they don't change the laws massively and I can apply for a UK naturalisation... seems like it's gonna be a very long term plan  :P

Hi Pookygirl,

I am in a very similar situation.  If you look around enough many UK unis take FAFSA and if you're opposed to taking out too many loans a lot of orgs in the US will give you fellowships--not all need, research or location based.  There are a few that specifically grant fellowship for graduate/doctoral level studies abroad.
Keep me posted on your progress and I'll do the same.

Best of luck!
