Hello everyone,

I'm new to the site but have been in Derby since January. In the States I'd done a bit of backpacking - more serious than the average camper but not quite "let's hoof it to Canada".

I'm looking forward to doing some real backpacking here (you know - tent, sleeping bag, food, stove, water filter, etc., on your back), I think they call it "wild camping" in the UK. Does anyone fancy this as well? I'm still very new to the trails but have a couple of guidebooks and will be picking up some Outdoor Survey maps.

I'm also looking for people to hike with, just to get me outdoors and exercising more, even if they don't have time to go backpacking.

Drop me a PM if interested please!

Hi Frank, hope you get out there. We're too far from you to join in but do check out

http://www.ramblers.org.uk/

The Uni probably has rambling or camping groups, too.

Thanks balmerhon, I've looked at the RC (haven't been to a meeting yet tho) but they seem to be like the Sierra Club in the States - older folks who are more into dayhikes (which is fine) and political issues (which is also fine) rather than what I'm really looking for. I might look into their programs a bit more but that's my initial impression anyway.

I'm going to meet up with some people from the Backpackers Club this week, I think they do a bit of wild camping from what I've read on their site.

You may be right, but there are RC groups specifically for 20-30s. There's a link just for that on the site.

Good luck!

well frank, we are too far north from you...and probably too old as well  ;)...but my hubby is a very avid walker either day hikes or camping... however, here are a couple web sites that may help you.

It's from the movie "The Fifth Element" - when the police ask Bruce Willis's character if he is classified as human, he responds "Negative, I am a meat popsicle." He's a bad-ass type character so it's a smart-ass response of course. It could also refer to being his character's apartment being in a very small one-room apartment (similar to a freezer). :) So maybe it kinda represents city living, modern living, crowded living...not sure what the movie's writer meant but I just did a search on it and it seems to be a popular cult movie reference. Kinda parallel internet evolution :)

might have to buy this shirt, or make my own :D

here's kind of a definition, but not my definition of it
