Tier 4 to Tier 1
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:35:27 PM »
Hi, my apologies if these questions have already been asked. I've run a few searches and couldn't find the answers with my search terms (either here or on UKBA), so I thought I'd go ahead and ask.

I'll be on a student visa (Tier 4) beginning this September. From that, I'd like to apply for Tier 1.

Do I have to wait until I've received my degree to apply for Tier 4, or can I apply while still a student? I've read of others who have applied while students, but I'm unsure as to whether that is still current.

Additionally, regarding my salary history, do you think I can gather the required documents (bank statements and letter from employer) now or do they have to be dated within any specific date range? It's a little complicated because I will have had two different banks within the 12-month time range and my employer, although the same one, will become incorporated and change names 2/3 of the way through. It'd be easiest if I could gather these documents now.

Also, it states all over the UKBA site that one shouldn't include both payslips and a letter from an employer, but I had a substantial amount removed from my salary post-tax for various things (health/dental insurance, renters' insurance, monthly travel pass, health savings account, etc.). Although I'll do my best to reflect this in the employer letter, do you think I should add the payslips? The amounts change over the 12 months due to increases in deductibles, marriage, and a move.

Thanks so much! I'm aware that requirements could end up changing by the time I'm ready to apply for Tier 1, but I'd like to prepare as much as I can before I leave the US in September. I'll definitely do a document check (with Vickie, as she clearly rocks).

It depends which Tier 1 you are talking about - general or PSW?

Hi Vicky,

General, as I should have enough points and it seems to have more advantages than PSW.

In which case, you can apply for the Tier 1 whenever you quaify, so if you already have aMasters you can apply when you get here.  Otherwise, if you are reliant on the UK Masters you need to wait until you have finished your course and have written confirmation that you have passed (not necessarily the degree certificate).

Payslips and an employer letter will only be taken as one piece of evidence,  They must match the other evidence, usually bank statements.  And you can start collating now.
