Saving Money - Tips?
« on: June 02, 2009, 12:51:55 PM »
And hi.

So, for those who are seasoned savers -  Having just added up the debt that I need to pay off back in the US - its managable, but it's not delightful, and I'm looking for ways to make my £ go a little further here, especially in light of the economy. So, I was just looking for tips you guys might have to keep costs down living over in the UK.    I try to keep costs down, although obviously I can do more.  What are some of the ways you've found you can save more money?

I've done the following so far:

 - signed up for the store cards (Boots Advantage/Nectar) as I shop at both Sainsbury's and Boots on a regular basis.
 - only do the dinners out on the voucher/special nights (cheap Mondays at Yo Sushi, or the Pizza Express deals with the movies on Wednesdays from Orange
 - only use public transportation, although I'm looking possibly into riding a bike to work, as the constant oyster top ups are not too cheap.  And I'm sort of terrified of drivers in London during the rush hour.)
 - buy store brands rather than premium brands when it truly doesn't make a difference.

Anything else?  My bills aren't too bad, I live in a houseshare with several people so the splitting of the bills isn't bad.  I don't have a credit history here yet, so I don't think I can apply for anything like a savings account yet here, although I'd love to.

Anyway, any tips you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

Yes, the Money Saving Expert website is a great and very well known resource used by many. You'll get alot of tips there.

It's a massive area to ask here as there's just so many areas where you can make your pound/money go further.

For instance, (and i've posted this on other threads here on UKY) I went through the whole house and got rid of things I just didn't need anymore. Changed light switches to dimmers to make the GU10 bulbs last much much longer after they kept popping very frequently with just normal switches, changed some bulbs to lower wattage ones, found things just plugged in on standby (DVD player in the kitchen for instance) and removed them, put some heaters on timers, have got switched extension cords, put mobile chargers on one extension lead and flick them off during the day while everyones out etc.

I always shop when there's a sale on! as i have my own business, I registered at Costco, have changed energy companies, utilised package deals for boiler, electrics, and drains insurance, sell off old printer cartridges, buy as much as I can off ebay ! - some of my current savings have been nothing short of phenomenal as we are doing some building work - a designer bathroom sink that someone realised was wrong and had paid £350 for, we picked up on ebay for £3.75! - I've also rung up my broadband supplier and threatened to leave, at which point they've knocked a whopping £12/month off my package, so instead of £24/month I now pay £12.

As you can see, theres lots you can do - just depends on where you'd like to start and how far you want to go! for instance I know of some online threads where people will go as far as ditching television, not having sky, just a pay as u go phone to no phone at all, right the way up to selling their houses and going to live on narrow boats and others even selling up everything to go live in motorhomes as they have a 5 year journey plan going around Europe!

As it seems you are looking to pay off debts asap, and hence wanting to cut back on expenditure to help realise that goal, I suggest

1. You make an accurate statment of affairs right now - list everything and dont hold back. Monitor and make a note of everything you spend right down to pennies if you like, and maybe do that for a month or two to get a benchmark.

2. All the while you are doing that, you can look to see any major obvious expenses you could minimise or exclude rightaway.

3. Start then to exclude items/elements you have decided are no longer needed

4. Keep recording all income and outgoings.

5. You'll build up a good picture - albeit financial figures! of how you stand and how you're improving.

6. I suggest picking up a copy of Quicken or Microsoft Money, or any of the other more minor personal finance software packages to help you. If you choose Quicken, drop me a PM as I used to work for Intuit and know that software very well indeed!

You should then be able to meet your goal as quickly as possible, without having to resort to what could be for you, desparate measures. A controlled and well thought out plan of action will really help!

Good luck !

Thanks, guys.  I'm by no means destitute or anything like that, but now that I've been here some months, I did want to start to look for where I could find additional savings.    I only operate on my income here (don't use credit cards anymore) so I am not incurring additional debt, but rather paying down the US CC and student loans.

I'll look into the savings accounts at my bank.  For whatever reason, I thought I didn't qualify.

I really enjoyed moneysavingexpert!  I'll spend time on it tonight and see what other helpful information it has.

Dennis,

Are you married?

Why, you may ask?

Some of those things you would have to have the cooperation of your wife to do. :)

One thing I bet you won't do is turn off the engine on your car and coast down hill. In the US that would be illegal but I think they are relaxing that (except for 16 wheelers)

Thanks Dennis for your tips. Keep them coming.

I've been getting into personal finance a lot lately.  Two sites that I find pretty helpful are Get Rich Slowly and Cash Money Life.  They're both US-based blogs, so some of the info may not apply, but a lot of it is about lifestyle adjustments, tips on areas to look for decreasing expenses, etc.

[As a side note, thanks to these blogs and others, I've knocked out 25% of my non-mortgage debt since late February 2009, and have increased by savings about twofold. :)]

I just wanted to thank you guys for all your suggestions.  I got on moneysavingexpert last night and built out my budget, and as long as I'm careful, I'm okay and can even start putting away money for a rainy day, which is awesome.  So thank you all!
