Sweet popcorn
« on: June 10, 2009, 05:22:30 PM »
My step kids are used to the sweet stuff  :-X and I've never made it before. I'm going to use air popped popcorn. I've read that you can just sprinkle icing sugar over it. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Yuk.  I think it's actually brown sugar that's used on it.  It's a horrible thing to do to popcorn unless it's a popcorn ball.

This is how I've seen it made before:

Put a couple of tablespoons of oil in a dutch oven type pot and put on medium/high heat.
Throw in about 3 kernels and wait for them to pop.
Once those pop, throw in the rest of the popcorn kernels (about 1/3 cup)
Quickly sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of sugar (regular granulated) over the unpopped kernels.
Cover the pot and keep shaking it to keep the kernels moving until they're all popped.
Once they are popped, sprinkle with a bit of salt.

I don't mind sweet popcorn (called kettle corn here) every once in a blue moon but I much prefer salty, buttered popcorn.

Is this what you mean?

Not really. I like Kettle corn because it's sweet and salty. But the popcorn the kids are used to is just sweet and that recipe calls for corn syrup.  :-\\\\
Thanks though!  :)

I've seen a couple more suggestions online that says sifting icing sugar on it and tossing works. Great way to ruin it, IMO, but it's not for me.  :)
