Half & Half
« on: January 30, 2014, 10:50:55 PM »
After coming back from the US I find myself drinking more coffee then tea and I happen to like my coffee with half & half  :)
So I was in Tesco today, in the dairy aisle, going from top to bottom and bottom to top and back again, looking for half & half, is not used here? Or is there something close to it, as my coffee is just not the same with skim milk  :P

Nope, you won't find it here. Try single cream.

Or a mixture of single cream and milk.

Or try using whole milk instead of skimmed?

First time I visited the States I thought half and half was the same as semi-skimmed milk, I almost spit my coffee out!

I have never been a fan of half and half. What is the draw?

I like it because I think it makes the coffee more creamier/richer tasting, since I only have one, maybe two cups a day, I want to make that one or two a really special cup  ;D ( I sound like a coffee commercial)  8)

I like that:

Make it a special cup - make it with Half & Half.

:(  I, too will miss my half & half!!!  Planning to pack a few bags of good ground coffee and my French press when I relocate and make my own concoction of half & half using cream and mixing with milk. I look forward to LOTS of tea and using an electric kettle!!!!!!!!

I find shopping for groceries to be fascinating in the UK! Having lived most of my life near Boston/New England, I enjoy a cosmopolitan city and having lots of exotic options to select from!!!

I used to love half and half in coffee--definitely just a more rich taste--almost a treat!

Then, ages ago when I did NutriSystem (does it still exist?) I used skim (nonfat) milk.  Then years later when I was vegan (not anymore) I used soy milk.  Nowadays I use full fat milk at home and semi-skimmed at work (seems to be what most people prefer).  I *hate* nonfat milk in coffee--it does almost nothing to lighten it and make it yummy.

I can't remember when I started taking my coffee black (years and years ago) and now the thought of cream is just not enticing. When I first started with coffee I used whole milk, but half and half always seemed slimy to me. It's funny how your tastes can change so radically over time. :)

I just relocated about 2 months ago and have searched high and low for half and half. The closeset I found was Coffeemate Powder in Sainsbury but it's still not the same. I'm looking for liquid flavored coffee creamer, hoping to bring some back my next trip to USA. Currently, I'm using a combination of skim milk and double cream, still not the same as it's missing the flavor.

It's funny -because I used to always use half and half in the US with sugar in my coffee.  When I moved here, I had started with double cream-with sugar then single cream with sugar-then milk (semi-skimmed or skimmed) without sugar as the milk sugars make it sweet enough.  With any kind of cream though it needs the sugar.   When I go back to my parents and they use half and half- I have to use sugar in it still -otherwise, it's still too slimey and a bitter off taste to me. However, I've got less and less of a sweet tooth these days and I can quite happily and easily drink my coffee black.  It's obviously not a US-UK thing, just a tastebuds changing over time kind of thing!  :)

Same, PB.
I used to take (whole)milk (or cream) and sugar, but my sweet tooth has decreased, so black is fine with me now, as long as the coffee itself is good quality.  I quite like the Paradise Street No 7 blend you get in Costa... handy for me as well, since there is a Costa drive-through on my way to work these days.
