New girl on the block
« on: June 08, 2009, 04:14:18 PM »
Hi everyone!

My name is Sara and I currently live in the USA in Oregon, but have also lived in Arizona and Las Vegas Nevada. I am 28 years old and have been married for 5 years, but we do not have any kids. We have 2 dogs who are like our children. My husband and I are about 90% sure we are relocating to the UK in fall 2010. I have been accepted at the University of Bristol to complete my MA and PhD programs in History (I will study the medieval period through the reformation). I am finishing my BA in English Lit/Writing with a minor in History and will be done spring 2010. I work at a high school as a secretary currently but have a background in medical assisting. I write a lot of freelance (ghostwriting) and am an amateur photographer & artist.

My husband works as a bilingual aid in the classrooms at the same High School that I work at. He speaks English and Spanish and is attending a two year college to get his Associates Degree before he transfers to a university.....he will most likely transfer to a UK university since he will finish his 2 year just before we move to the UK. He wants to study graphic design and web design etc. He is most concerned about finding a job.....we have money saved but not enough to qualify for the UK visa requirements etc so we are hoping he can find a job that will offer a permit working visa so we can qualify for the UK visa. Any suggestions???

We are both really nervous about moving to the UK....it's a HUGE change for us but I think we are up to the challenge. We will probably live in either Bristol or some of the surrounding towns like Bath. ANY INFO about relocating, the town, healthcare, school, jobs etc would be helpful.

I have done a lot of research on the Uni and town but I am quickly discovering I clearly have not read EVERYTHING!!! So I would love some help out here!!! Any tips please PM me :)

Hold on...are you saying that you don't have enough money for the Student visa or for a separate visa for your husband?  Because he can accompany you as a dependent on your student visa, and if he does that then I believe he is allowed to work full-time.  There is basically no chance of him obtaining his own visa if he has only an associate's degree and no experience in the field he wants to enter.  Sorry to be blunt, but visa requirements are really strict.  You might look into getting him accepted to a UK uni, that way he could get his own visa and maybe take out a loan to help the pair of you get by.

Here is the guidance for Tier 4 visas http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/applicationforms/pbs/Tier4migrantguidance.pdf

Meanwhile...welcome to UKY!

I actually THANK YOU for being blunt :) what a relief :)
I guess I should have been more clear....He would qualify to come with me on my student visa but I was told that before we would be cleared to get the UK visa we would need to show that we make enough to support ourselves for a year so roughly $12 K (USD) for they year. We have about $6500 USD saved and will continue to save this year but I was just worried that we would both have a hard time finding jobs. I know I won't since I will have the BA and expeirence and I have exp. tutoring in ESL so I think I will be fine but I am worried about my husband. If he is not accepted into a UK Uni but is able to come on my visa and work what are some options for him? Is it not looking good? How about classroom assistants at a school? Thanks for your help! :)

I think you have your numbers way off. You'll need course fees (about $15,000) and 9 months living maintenance for you (£5,400 = $9000). Plus maintenance for your spouse (£400/mo = $6000). So that's $30,000 intended for the first 9 months.

Well I didn't list the school tuition because I already have that covered :) so yes in that case my numbers were very off LOL :)
So besides the tuition (which I have covered through Sallie Mae), we are looking at around 16K in savings for visa approval? I was afarid of that!!! Someone told me we would only need around $4K and I was like ummmmmmm really?!!??! Then someone else told me $12K which I also thought was a little on the low side. Interesting....Thanks for the info!!! I appreciate it :) :)
