Tube strike
« on: June 10, 2009, 11:32:47 PM »
Anyone suffered from the Tube strike today?

After arriving at Marylebone the amount of people waiting for buses and taxis was overwhelming, I decided to walk to Bloomsbury.  It wasn't too bad, only took half an hour.

Very fortunate to find a free taxi at Bedford Square back to Marylebone although the road leading up to the station was chock-a-block so got let out at Marylebone Road.

I suspect I'll have to walk tomorrow as well unless RMT has a change of heart!
I can't believe what they're striking over.  Hopefully they won't try to do the same thing in the coming weeks or months.

Fortunately the Northern line was working which allowed me to get to the train station to take a train into Victoria. I did loads of walking yesterday. Didn't even bother trying to figure out if there was a bus that could have at least taken me part way. Will likely do the same today.

I just took my laptop home and am working from there.  My only options are the buses right now (not near anything else useful) and my friend's commute took her 2+ hours yesterday.

I'm just working from home, my commute takes 1.5hours on a GOOD day, there's no way I'm trying it today or yesterday :( I popped out to Tesco yesterday and the queues at Hammersmith bus depot were insane.

Effing nightmare today. There was a security incident at Highgate, so the Northern Line southbound was screwed.  I was supposed to go to court in Sutton today, but after an hour only getting two stops I called it a day.

Squeezing onto the overground train at Highbury & Islington this morning was an experience I wouldn't like to repeat again soon, but after I was able to make my way down into the car it wasn't too bad.  Here's hoping this afternoon is a bit calmer.

This sort of thing always makes me think of the Amateur Transplant's song called "London Underground"

Terrible traffic on Wednesday morning and took nearly two hours to get to work on the bus (a trip that normally takes 25 minutes on the underground). Then Hammersmith roundabout was completely shut down in the afternoon after a pedestrian was hit (killed?) and walked the 4.5 miles home as no buses were able to get through.

It's times like this that I wish I was still healthy enough to walk everywhere like I used to. I also don't look ill enough for anyone to give me a seat on the bus. :( It's a fine line...

Even considering that, I had to abandon the bus and get out and walk the rest of the way home on Wednesday night. My bus sat on Houndsditch for 40min (there's only two stops there, which should give you an indication of its length). The whole area around Aldgate was just insane - people sat in their cars with the engines off and doors open, it was so bad.

Luckily the buses were much better going the other direction to Denmark Hill yesterday so I didn't have any problems getting to hospital. I think the tube strike just doesn't want me going to work!
