I know you can't predict the future...
« on: June 14, 2009, 10:37:24 AM »
But I was wondering if anyone thinks that flight prices will go down, or if I should book now at a higher price.

I have had a crap time recently and have decided to take my toddler to NYC for a few weeks to stay with the family...in the height of summer, but I am desperate to get away to get my head cleared up and make some big work related decisions once I come back.

At the moment the fare from MAN to JFK is about £460 each, if I wait longer do you think it will go down or keep going up!!! I usually travel in September, but as my son is starting school, I am now bound to the school calender!! What a nightmare!

If anyone has any advice at all, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks!!!

The only think I can think of is for a cheaper fare you could fly out of London, just checked for late June to mid July and it's £543 for 1 adult & 1 child on VirginAtlantic. Prices will most likely go up, the closer you get to when you want to go the higher the fare, plus the price of oil is starting to climb again too.

Thanks, I might do that. I am checking flight prices with connections from Manchester.
Just ran that and its super expensive, £1100 for the two of us!

Check http://www.kayak.co.uk  It's a site that compares prices from a lot of airlines.

What I ran was single segment from LHR to JFK. You could check taking the train from Manchester to London.

Sites like that are cool, I've come across it before. Unfortunately when travelling with children it does not allow you to specify their age and just gives prices for adult tickets. Some of the airlines websites do this, such as United, which is why I always use Expedia or Travelocity when I book our trips since my daughter is only 12 months and does not require a seat. So they save me the hassle of having to call the airline directly and try to book her in after I've booked our tickets.

Gulp, now with a 3 year old! It probably would work out cheaper tofly straight from Manc. I only like to use Kayak as a price locater, when I fly with a kid, I usually phone the airline for more help, or use their own website! Thanks!

Check Priceline.  Priceline had cheaper flights listed than kayak when I was looking for flights to IRE, and I think you can list one adult and one child when you search.

I usually go through continental's website cause they fly direct man to newark...newark works best for me. I think they do fly to JFK though also. I find I get the best prices right on their website.
I also find waiting longer prices usually go up...good luck on your hunt!

US Airways flies MAN-PHL. If the fare is cheap enough there's also Amtrak from Philly to Newark/NYC...

To get to the Amtrak station in Philly from the airport, you need to take the R1 Regional Rail airport line, first, then once you get to 30th street, you have to go down the ramp to the Amtrak section of the station. While totally fine to do alone, I don't think I'd recommend it with a child.

I came across this article yesterday... looks as though the "experts" believe that fares will increase.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/11/AR2009061102899.html

Well she was considering taking the train from Manchester to London upthread so I figured she might be alright taking the train from PHL to 30th St. It's her decision, of course.
