To declare or not to declare?
« on: August 20, 2009, 05:45:11 AM »
I'm moving to the UK on a fiance visa the day after tomorrow and it just occurred to me: do I need to declare my baggage at the airport if it's just my clothes and personal effects? Any personal stories would be appreciated, the HMRC website seems a bit contradictory.

thanks!

I don't know what the rule is, but I didn't declare anything.  I moved over with two large suitcases, my laptop, and musical instruments.

I would never have considered declaring my clothing or personal items, especially if it's all used stuff and not for re-sale (no commercial value).

From my own personal experiences with UK airports, you'd have to go through the 'Declare' channel and find someone to make a declaration to.  You will not have any problem going out through the 'Nothing to Declare' channel carrying your own personal items and effects.

Best of luck on the move!

My understanding is that you do not have to declare any of your personal affects that you will use for yourself and have no intent to sell.  We just moved over (a whole family) with 9 checked bags, 3 carry-ons, and 3 personal items all full and we did not declare anything.  Now if you brought with liquor or other declarable objects then maybe but if they are your household items for your use then no.

On the things we shipped our carrier said we only had to declare items we purchased in the last 6 months and then said that you just say everything was over 6 months old.
