In the process of moving
« on: May 05, 2009, 04:04:51 PM »
I read a lot of questions people ask about moving to UK, we are in the process of doing this and I thought a log of our "adventure" may be useful.
About two months ago we started researching companies on the internet. We chose three companies, and these companies came to our home and did a visual assessment, this is a must. When the quotes came in from these companies we did more research on them and made our choice. The company we chose have been very helpful and taken us by the hand because we've never done this before and probably will never do it again.
We decided what we weren't taking - dining room furniture was too big- anything electrical etc. We did not insure the shipment with the shipping company but used a different company because it was much cheaper, so shop around for prices it's worth it.
Yesterday May 4, the packers arrived at our house about 9.30am, there were three people and lots of boxes and packing materials. After a quick tour and telling them what was going and what wasn't going they got to work and everything was wrapped and packed. They were very efficient and apart from taking a break for lunch they never stopped working. They finished about 4.45pm and so far we are very pleased. I had three phone calls during the day checking on their progress and to see if we had any problems - we didn't.
Today, May 5, another team of packers arrived at 9.15am and are currently wrapping sofas and armchairs. They are to check everything that what done yesterday. The container should arrive in 10 minutes, 10am.
I shall update this log as we go along and if anyone has any questions I shall be happy to answer them.
So far we are very happy with the company we chose and when we get further along I'll give the name of the company and all the contacts.
We do have a schedule and the container leaves here today and goes to Houston, from where it leaves May 13 and arrives in Felixstowe May 30. We have the name of the ship and are able to follow it's progress on the internet. We don't know how long it will sit on the dock in Felixstowe but we will let you know.

The container arrived on time, 10am, it was packed in two hours and left at 12 noon for Houston. So far so good. It was weighed empty before it arrived and will be weighed again fully loaded. Our price depends on not exceeding 5500lbs. We are a retired couple with no kids, who have a two bedroom house, but we have taken a lot of garden furniture and a large outdoor grill etc. We had a 20' container and the quoted price was "door to door" and was $7689, fingers crossed there will not be any extras. Hope this helps. I shall be checking my credit card online tomorrow to see what has actually been charged, so watch for an update.

We did not exceed the weight we were quoted for, so I have just had an email from the company informing us that the final amount will be less than quoted - what a nice surprise.
So far this company has been great. :) :) :)

Audrey, we got a quote of $13.75 per cubic foot for a move from NJ to Scotland, if that helps give you an idea.

Some companies quote with different guide lines but if you are having a container for your sole use, as we did, the price is by weight not cubic feet. We did not want to share a container. Our container was sealed when it left our home and that seal should still be intact when it arrives in UK.  ;)

BeccaJaneStClair, that quote was from Rainier Overseas Moving.  They sent an agent to our apartment, and that was the price they gave us for shipping the contents of our two-bedroom apartment (although we aren't planning on shipping most of our furniture, so it was mainly for personal items, some clothing, and kitchen supplies).

Thank you for the price info Rosalyn and Lehrin.  :)

My fiance and I have decided to go with upakweship.com. We have enough stuff to fill an entire 20 foot container. We're going to to do the "load it and unload it yourself" option. They'll bring the container to our place and then pick it up 2 hours later. We were quoted $3,300 which I think it great considering we will fit all of our worldly possessions without having to leave anything behind. There may be cheaper options but my fiance and I are so worn out from the process we're just going to go for this option.  [smiley=dead.gif]

Today we leave US for UK. I have checked on our shipment and it is still scheduled to arrive 30th May. I had an email from the British company who will be delivering and unpacking our container. The delivery date is Friday, 5th June. We were told to expect our shipment to take between 6 and 10 weeks and I had read many horror stories where shipments were held for ransom for several extra weeks, so we are really pleased that ours will have taken exactly one month from leaving our home in Texas to arriving at our new home in East Yorkshire.
The company we are using is Suddath/Sentry International, they have been great from day 1, our initial contact was Michael Renzella, we highly recommend them.
Watch pout for an update to see how the British delivery goes.

We arrived here in UK May 27th as planned. Our container arrived in UK May 30, again as planned and it was delivered to our new home June 4. Everything was just as it should be, the container was still sealed, everything was unpacked and placed where we wanted it. Nothing was damaged and all the packing materials was taken away when the unpacking team left.
From packing in Texas to unpacking in East Yorkshire was exactly one month, we were very impressed with Suddath/Sentry and would recommend them to anyone, it is an excellent service they provide and worth every penny.
