Insanely good fare?
« on: June 15, 2009, 12:40:36 AM »
I was just checking for prices of one-way flights to Heathrow from Denver for my upcoming move in August and came across a non-stop flight for $360 OW.  My dilemma is that I dont have my visa yet, but will be applying the first week of July.  I am hoping to get educated opinions (since this is of course an impossible question to really answer), but a) is it just me, or is this an insanely good price?, and b) since I plan to use an expediter and have a straight forward application, do you think it would be safe to book my trip before I have my visa?  I will be applying 43 days ahead of my travel date...  Opinions, please??

Thank you!

That's an excellent price, I'd buy the ticket if I were you, though I'd be prepared for the possibility that something might go wrong and I wouldn't be able to use it.  But you're well-informed about your application and if you're using an expediter the odds are good that you'll have your visa in plenty of time.  I say go for it.

that is a very good fare especially going straight to denver, I had an employee discount and flew virgin airlines from New york JFK to heathrow and that was $220... which airline are you going on? I dont have much experience in visas but from what I was reading about a year ago, I'd suggest that you dont risk it and give yourself more time to get a visa.

Its on United.  I think that even with the penalties to change it (if there is visa trouble) it will be less than it could be if the fare increases to "normal" levels.... I'm going to breathe for a bit and then probably do it!  Woo.

Hmmm, I'm thinking by now you've already gone for it.  I wouldn't have, though.  I waited until the visa was in my hands before I booked anything.  Peace of mind was worth it for me.  Isn't it about $200 to change your flight if you need to?  Maybe that's better than a new ticket, though.  Good luck!

I'd use an expediter for the visa and book the flight. For one way on United that is an excellent fare. But Denver is their Hub so it may be that they have better fares from Denver in general. I wonder if that is the price for a one way, what would a return fare cost since they are usually cheaper than one ways.

The return flight was over $800.  The BA non-stop flight was $1300. This is one of those fares that is "limited" as in you can't get frequent flyer miles for it and I bet its difficult to change, so fingers crossed!!  I had a "what have I done??" moment last night, but am feeling confident today since we will be using an expediter and have 43 days to allow for processing.   Now to tell the hubs.. :)

Thanks for the opinions!  I appreciate it!

I've been looking for cheapo one way fares, the best I have found for flights in early August are $500-ish on BerlinAir from Miami to Heathrow (err...maybe Gatwick) and $600 from Orlando to Gatwick on Aer Lingus. Turns out I am leaving Little Rock for my old stomping grounds of central Florida before I make my big move, so I have a lot of airports to choose from! It seems like there are more European airlines that give you a cheaper price for one way than for round trip, as opposed to doubling the price for a one-way.

I've literally spent four hours looking at different flights today.....it's probably pointless because I'm not even sure exactly when in August I am coming over!

Here we go:

17 AUG 2009- Applied online
20 AUG 2009- Biometrics
24 Aug- Sent everything to expediter
26 Aug-Application taken to consulate
26 Aug-Fiancee visas approved!!!
 2 Sep-Moved to UK!

I'm jealous! I'm also going from Denver to Heathrow but not until September 1st. There are four of us I have to buy tickets for so even a $50 savings per ticket is awesome.

I hated United compared to BA but for that price difference, I'll suffer.

Did you get your visa? I got mine in less than 24 hours with an expediter!

Good luck, was that price inclusive of taxes?

It did include taxes and all other fees.  I just checked it now and its $1300 for the same one way flight.  I found it through Vayama, but I also saw it available on some other sites for that price. I have no idea why it was so low, but no complaints from me :)

Amy, just a heads up when you are looking for cheap one way flights, I found a lot of affordable ones on AerLingus, but you know about the potential trouble going through Ireland, right?
