I use "You Alright" as a greeting...but after 16 years in Manchester, its hard not to. Its my favorite greeting!!

When I first came here as a student, I used to respond quite defensively and say "I'm fine why" but now I usually just respond with "Fine thanks" I do use it in the states quite unconsciously, the responses I get always make me laugh.

I've lived in Newcastle for three years now and I still fumble awkwardly for an answer when people greet me with "Alreet, pet?" and "How's tricks?"
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Cute!  ;D

Haha... the usual response to this question around here is "Aye, canny," or "Aye, champion" which really just means "I'm good."  :) People ask me all the time "You alright youngun?" or "Alright hinny?" and I just "Yeah, I'm good. How are you?" since I'm not brave enough to say the usual stuff just yet.  ;) (I have started to say "haweh" a lot, though, thanks to DH, so it probably won't be long!)

There are two things that people don't say in Ireland and I'm very happy about: 'Alright?' and 'Ta'. I never knew how to respond to 'Alright?' and I would usually just bumble out some answer. And disliking 'Ta' is just a pet peeve of mine.

Don't come to the North then!  They say both here.  My husband has even picked up saying "ta" which drives me to distraction.  They say alright here, but not usually on it's own... more along the lines of "Alright there mucker what about ye" or the ever popular "Alright there what's the craic?"

My husband said 'ta' when he was living in Sheffield, but hanging out with me and the move back to Dublin finally axed that one. Thank goodness! I would prefer 'Alright' in a sentence than just the word on its own.

I would die if someone said this to me: "Alright there mucker what about ye". That is too funny!

It's very much a Derry thing; even people from Belfast are amused by it.  They really should just put it on a welcome sign as you enter town!

I always respond with, "Fine, thank you.  How are you?"  Sorry, I never have nor ever will be able to do "aw-wight?".

Think I've finally got to the point where I manage to respond "Alright, you?" to that.  Took longer than to say "cheers" or "ta".  My OAP neighbour always says "Alright duck?" to me when he sees me over the fence, LOL.

I don't get 'alright' very often, if at all! I have heard it, but I think mostly on television. Is it a regional thing at all? Or do I just lead a very sheltered existence?  :P

I never got it till I started work.  I'm not sure if it's regional or maybe a age thing.  The husband would never say it.

I knew I liked him.

Here people just ask "Ah-ite?"  I had no clue what they were saying the first few times I heard it. Now I just reply "ah-ite" back.

Despite being here for over six years I just cannot bring myself to say that word. Here in Wolverhampton they say 'ya alwright' and if I said it back with my southern drawl, it sounds like it takes ages for me to say as I simply cannot say it jumbled into one word as they do here. So I respond by smiling and saying hello since it's said as a greeting anyways.  ;D

Yeah, I sometimes just say "hiya" quietly when I catch someone's eye and they smile at me or look like they might give me the "a'right?" thing.  :)
