Virgin Atlantic--no more dogs out of IAD?
« on: July 07, 2009, 01:13:23 AM »
Can someone confirm or deny that Virgin is no longer accepting dogs as cargo out of Washngton Dulles?
I just spoke to a rep with virgin who claims they no longer handle dogs in cargo (PETS and DEFRA have not yet updated their website if this is the case...)
I was instructed to call Dulles International Airport, but no one answered.

Anyone know anything further?  Otherwise I guess my only option is BA out of BWI?  Virgin Atlantic quoted me a cheaper kennel rate, but that was 2 months ago when i made the inquiry.

Is it just a summer thing? Due to heat?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I got a quote about a month ago with Virgin to fly out of Dulles (in Nov/Dec), but if you spoke with them today and they said no, I would assume your information is more accurate/up-to-date.  They didn't mention potentially not offering that route in the future, but maybe it's a last-minute change.

I never had any luck contacting anyone at Dulles about anything, so I hope you have better luck.

BA flies out of Dulles and BWI, though, according to their representatives.  (Their quote is apparently good for either airport, as well.)

Edited to add: balmerhon may be right and it's just a restriction due to heat.

This might just be a typo - but DCA is National, not Dulles (IAD).  Is it possible you've just got your airports mixed up?

balmerhon--I didn't actually give dates for travel, so I don't think this is the case.  Also, from the way the rep said Dulles doesn't handle dogs anymore, it seemed more permanent.

I suppose I'll just have to wait for final confirmation from Dulles and or a more senior staff at Virgin...

And yes, DCA was a typo, hard to keep all the Washington area airport codes straight!

Thought so, but just wanted to check - was hoping there'd be a simple explanation/solution for your problem!  :)  Oh, well.  Hope you get things sorted!
