Country house hotels in Yorkshire?
« on: July 03, 2009, 08:59:47 PM »
DH and I are starting to think about making plans for our anniversary in October.  We wanted to go to a particular B&B in Yorkshire, but have just discovered that it's completely full up until January 2010 and even our anniversary in 2010 is full!!! We'd still like to go to Yorkshire though because DH has friends there whom I haven't met yet, plus we think it would be a fun trip.  So do any of you Yorkshire Yanks have any recommendations for a nice country house hotel?  We don't want to spend a fortune, but are looking to splash out a little bit.  Something under £200 a night with big bathtubs and a good breakfast would be ideal.

Thanks!

In a city, outside a city, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, the Dales?  What are you looking for?  I know there are several lovely hotels with a great big country house feel to them in and around York.   ;D  Let us know so we can give you some great suggestions!!

We're really not particular.  I think DH's friend lives in Leeds, but I would prefer not to be in a city, and he's not the main reason from the trip so there's no pressing need to be close to him.  So I guess somewhere in the country, but north, south or dales doesn't really matter.

This one IS in Leeds (burbs) - it's where we got married.  I'll have a looky loo for some others.

I think Hazlewood Castle is gorgeous and I've heard some good things about it.  It's nearer York than Leeds, but just off the A64.

Otherwise, there is this page on ones in the Yorkshire Dales!!

I'll see if I can find any more, because there a few girls at my work who are getting married or who are going to weddings at country house hotels this summer.

I love that this one is on 'Cowpasture Road':

I can attest to the bathtubs there!  :)  (also the restaurant is really a top-notch, local cuisine kind of place)

I think the Devonshire Arms, and maybe even Craiglands, has a spa.

I've been to Hazlewood Castle! When I was a study abroad student some friends and I randomly stopped off there on the way back to Sheffield from Castle Howard and had a look around.  It is bloody gorgeous.  Would have loved to get married there actually,  but of course it was exorbitant.  Lovely place to stay for an anniversary, though :)

Also, Yorkshire is a BIG place (by English standards) so I think you should put some thought into where you want to be...it's officially four counties:  South, West, North, and the East Riding.

These are some fantastic places, I feel like I have something to go on now.  I know Yorkshire is big, but since I'm so unfamiliar with it, I didn't want to narrow the search down too much just based on geography.  I'd rather find a nice place to stay, then make plans based on that.  If we end up being really far away from DH's friend, we can always meet each other halfway.  Plus our anniversary is on a Friday, so we can take the weekend to explore, and don't have to stay in one place the whole time.

Thanks for the fabulous suggestions, ladies!

We live just round the corner from the Craiglands in Ilkley and I am sorry to report we hear very mixed things about it.  We have been to some good functions there, but the food and service can be a bit hit and miss.  It also feels a 'bit tired' inside.

The Devonshire Arms, by contrast, always seems to get very good reviews and it is in a beautiful spot at Bolton Abbey, which is great for walks.

Also try these ...

www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/hotels/wood-hall-hotel/ -  fancy hotel and spa near Wetherby in lovely rolling countryside, but just 30 mins from central Leeds - very peaceful (I went to a great wedding there)

www.ruddingpark.co.uk - on the edge of Harrogate, also very nice, with golf course and other leisure stuff

Ah yes, the Yorkshire tourist board is open for business!

Hee hee - people are always accusing me of that, but let me tell y'all (everybody) - this guy (Yorkshire/Virginia) knows everything about everything up here (and then some)!   ;D
