Credit cards that offer free groceries?
« on: May 17, 2009, 11:50:44 PM »
Are there currently any UK credit cards that offer the ability to earn points towards paying for groceries? Like perhaps at supermarkets like Sainsburys, Tesco or Marks & Spencer (assuming M&S is a supermarket). I am moving to London in a matter of two weeks on a working holiday visa (I'm Canadian) and here in Canada we do have a credit card like that.

Thanks.

Reward credit cards are very common in the UK. All of the supermarkets you mentioned, plus Asda, and many other big stores, including John Lewis, have such cards.

Apart from that, you can get other kinds of reward card. Sky, (A satellite & cable TV company) for example offer a card which gives you 1.26% off your Sky bill for every £100 spent, and the AA (Automobile Association) have one that gives you points that you can redeem for discounts on membership and insurance. There are plenty more. It is a big thing here. It might be worth weighing up the pros and cons of such cards compared with plain cashback cards:

(Or even considering an non-reward card with a lower APR). Of course the usual advice about wise card use applies.

Remember

Loyalty cards and reward schemes are only worthwhile if you never, ever pay interest. This is worth emphasising because as soon as you do start paying interest, your bank charges will immediately overshadow any benefits that you might get from your card.

So you have to be disciplined to make these cards work for you.

If you’re not able to do this, or already have debts that you’re paying interest on, then you need to look for a low APR rather than a loyalty scheme.

Tesco's has a credit card tied into their reward scheme (clubcard), and there is a Nectar credit card which offers similar, but not as good rewards when shopping at Sainsburys. M&S and John Lewis / Waitrose also offer similar cards.

Here is a link for some more info: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/loyalty-scheme-tricks

Basically, it says that these cards may not be as good as cashback or airmiles cards.
