yeast problems
« on: July 23, 2009, 04:02:19 PM »
I just moved to Scotland a couple weeks ago. I love cooking and baking, and I struggle at times to find ingredients and tools here.

I love baking bread, but I haven't found yeast anywhere. I know they have it, but the clerks at my local grocery store didn't know where to find it in the shop. So I'm just wondering what aisle I might find it on. Also, do they only sell dry yeast here or is it possible to get bakers yeast (the fresh stuff)?

I find it really moist here. Has anyone found that to be a problem when trying to get their dough to rise?

Any tips or suggestions would be helpful! Thanks.

Yeast? All supermarkets carry Yeast in the baking Aisle. They always have two or three different types. Go to antother supermarket

You should be able to find yeast in envelopes or little cans in the baking aisle near the flour. IIRC, It's usually on the top shelf but if you're going to a very small store, it could be anywhere around there. I think Hovis is one of the brands.

It's easy to find dried yeast but I've never seen fresh yeast in a supermarket.  Although saying that I'm a cheapskate Tesco/Morrisons man you may have more luck somewhere a bit more middle class like Waitrose.

You can usually get fresh yeast from either a good deli or a proper local baker (not a Greggs or something.)  Failing that there's always the internet.

A friend of mine was actually able to get fresh yeast from the bakers at Asda! They didn't even sell it to her, they just gave her some of theirs!

Well, just to prove myself wrong, Morrison's had fresh yeast today.  It was in the fridge section by the ready-made pastry and that stuff.

If you're looking for bigger amounts than you might find in a grocery store, I've found a couple of local natural foods stores that have had those bricks of the stuff.  It might be worth poking around.

I was asking around for cake boxes at sainsbury and saw they had a large block of fresh yeast.  I asked if they were selling any and they gave me a small chunk for free!  Cake boxes were free too :)  Never hurts to ask around!
