Less than two months over here..
« on: July 09, 2009, 03:50:53 PM »
Alright people.  I figured this was my safe bet to rant.  Let me begin by saying I love living in Northern Ireland, the Republic is beautiful as well.  I am grateful for the assistance I have received by anyone to help me gethere...HOWEVER

Mother-in-law...

I am very grateful for what she has done for her son, myself and our daughter BUT she needs to remember that she is MY daughter and her sons daughter.  Not HER daughter!  I wish she'd respect our parental wishes!!  Pulling the child from her fathers arms, literally taking the stroller away, yanking the pacifier out of the child's mouth, insisting that she doesn't eat enough, or that when she does eat it must be smothered in custard.

Washing laundry without splitting whites and darks (or bathmats!!) and washing dishes without rinsing them (I know I saw this on another thread in here months ago!!) and for f&^ks sake- "washing" the bottles/sippy cups in dirty dishwater, not rinising them so that I find them greasy, stinking of rotten milk with dried food chunks.

*takes a breath*

this is a start, anyway..

(as you can see, we have had to live with her until we are on our own feet.. the sooner I get work, the better!  Husband only recently started work!)

Welcome to the forum!  :)

A thread you might find of interest:

Also, why not introduce yourself with a post on the Welcome Wagon section?  :)

I think there are some others living in NI, and at least one person I know of lives in ROI.

Just want to add: even after the two of you move into your own place, if you're going to be relying on MIL for childcare, you'd better speak up now (gently) and set some ground rules with a heart-to-heart talk. Hubby included (no burying his head in the sand just because it's him Mum!)

Otherwise, you'll be at work always worrying about the baby drinking from greasy, dried food chunk nipples, having the dummy yanked from her and such.

Congratulations on your DH's job. Hope you find something soon, too.

Welcome to Ireland!  ;D

All the beauty of this island can't save you from your MIL! In fact, I imagine the weather can only magnify your grievances! Definitely check out the link Mrs R sent and feel free to vent away. Best of luck getting on your feet and getting your own place. I was just today thinking about what it would be like if we had to live with my in-laws and I can't see I'd be too happy about it. And I LIKE them!

Thanks for the replies!  I thought I had seen a special section for in laws before- must have looked over it!  I''ll repaste it there.  I swore I posted on the Welcome Wagon a few months back, but I'll have to check there as well.  Ideally, we wouldn't need childcare assistance from MIL, but that may be unavoidable once school begins (which will be a while for me now unless I can d NQVs)  I'm a "Nursing Auxiliary" or something here.  At home I was a CNA/tech on a medical/surgical ward of a small hospital.  I like 3 days a week for work!  Make;s it easier to be at home with the little one as well.

Urgh, I know it's never easy, but remember that she used to be the Queen of the house before you arrived, so any changes should be implemented extremely gently.
