?Bringing personal belongings after the move
« on: August 16, 2009, 03:43:51 AM »
I have been living in the UK for just under 3 years now and am currently visiting my mom in the states. She has been storing things I left behind and I want to bring back a good bit of it with me.

How do I work out the customs? Some of it, I just don't remember what I paid and most of it is over 10 years old. I know I'll be within my duty limits but just not sure how to handle this.

Also, it says that if you are within your allowance to use the green channel. I can do this but if they want to check my bags will they take them to the side? I ask because I don't like holding people up and I will have a baby in a pushchair along with 4 cases, 2 carry ons and a diaper bag. So if it would be better to just go through the red channel I'll do that.

I already have an itemized list so now it's just determining value for my old stuff.

Thanks for any advice you have!

Personal belongings older than 6 months do not draw a customs tax.  You go through the green line.  If you do get stopped, yes, you will be pulled over to one side.
