I found frozen jalapeno poppers!!!
« on: August 10, 2009, 11:42:33 AM »
So one of my all time favorite snack/appetizer foods is jalapeno poppers.  Having lived in Southern California for almost 7 years and frequenting Jack-in-the-Box they were always one of my guilty pleasures.

So I was beyond excited to find them in Sainsbury's yesterday!!!! Plus Sainsbury's is also carrying Sailor Jerry Rum now.... which if you've never tried you're missing out!!!!

Therefore, I <3 Sainsbury's....  ;D

I don't know how long you have been here, but Sainsbury's had those over the holidays last year (when more people buy frozen snack foods) and several other stores had them around that time, too. Not sure who else carries them on a regular basis, but I believe I have found them at Lidl and Aldi in the past, the Lidl closest to us has a bigger frozen foods section so they normally carry those and mozzarella sticks, etc.
For me the much bigger challenge is finding fresh jalapenos...  :-\\\\ :\\\'(
I saw one pepper just once in a bag of mixed chiles, which annoyed me because I didn't want to have to buy several bags of mixed chiles to get 3 jalapenos.  ::) I should just read up on growing a pepper plant or something...

The online consensus is that they are not too difficult to grow in the UK.

I'm growing about a dozen Jalapeno plants at the moment - just because there were 25 seeds in the pack (all but two germinated - some of the "losses" were gifts to ! The seeds are fairly widely available and I don't get the impression they're difficult to grow, though they don't take well to frost, so you need to start them indoors or in a greenhouse - and if you want them for another year you'd have to take them indoors over winter.

However, I can't speak for the results as I haven't had any flowers yet, but the plants are still fairly small.

Or you could buy online, £2.30 for 5  at http://www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk/shop/index.php?target=products&product_id=23 (but minimum order £6.00 so you could buy seeds or a growing kit for next year! :)

I'm pleased to hear you don't have any flowers yet John, at least it's not just me then! I was starting to give up on mine. Where do you have them (garden, windowsill etc)?

My tomato plants are doing very well though - surprised at the first attempt, 2 plants from seed and 1 we bought, and all look to be producing a nice crop.

I got non-frozen ones at Tesco last night (they were in the Reduced section ;D made a nice addition to dinner for 50p). They're pretty good. I've had them a few times. You definitely see them more around the holidays!

I have noticed that the ones here are more likely to have cream cheese than cheddar.

The pizza places do them for delivery as well, if you're so inclined, like pizza hut do them and I think Papa johns does them as well :)

Oh I guess so... Those are the ones I see. They're also my favorite ;D So I never thought about it.

Mainly the windowsill (about 10 of them) but 4 are sitting in pots on a wall in the garden. Those ones haven't really been fed, so they're quite small and bushy - the ones I fed indoors are maybe a bit large and leggy, but we'll see!

Looking at someone's chilli-growing website I saw that the last of their harvest was in October and late-July they were still cropping, so I hope there's time for mine yet! Next year I could plant earlier (though if I keep the plants alive over winter I won't really need to plant any more!)

The fruit has only just started to appear on some tomato plants I picked up in a plant sale at work a couple of months ago. I think I last grew tomatoes as a kid!

I haven't been here long... and desperately wanted jalapeno poppers at my wedding reception that we're making the food for ourselves.  I would make them but way to time intensive to make 100 poppers...

Although I did find fresh jalapenos at Tesco.  They had them labeled as just regular chilies, however because of the size I knew they were definitely jalapenos... 3 for £1....
