Residential driving courses?

Hi all,

My bf recently started taking standard once-a-week (or, every few weeks, due to scheduling conflicts) lessons, but circumstances have now changed, and he really needs his license as soon as possible.

Has anyone had any experience with the intensive, residential driving courses that some places offer? 

I did look into some of the residential courses, but didn't end up going with one in the end. I know my former boss did one in Wales a while ago with success.

Last October, I had a two week window during which I was hoping to get my license. What I did was call a local instructor a couple months ahead of time, and explained what I wanted to do. We blocked out 10 hours of lessons over the two weeks (2 hour lessons M, W, F) and I scheduled the test for the Friday at the end of the second week. I told him that I was willing to do whatever it took, so we agreed that after my first lesson we would assess where I was, and add in lessons if he thought it was necessary.

I ended up keeping the schedule of 10 hours, and managed to pass my test. I will say, however, that I did hours of extra practice every day with my husband. Basically I lived and breathed driving for 2 weeks.

I would try contacting some local instructors and seeing what they suggest, and what they can offer.

does anyone know if it would be difficult to get a driver's license without owning a car?  like, could i schedule a 'lesson' the day i am taking the test and use the driving instructor's car instead of my own?

Absolutely. Many people (including me) have used their instructor's car, since it is what they are used to practicing on, and is all set up for the test. You generally just pay for using the car for the test at the same rate as a lesson. It's also beneficial to schedule a lesson right before your test, so you can get some last minute practice with your instructor.

Thanks for the suggestion.  He had been trying to schedule two lessons per week with a local instructor, but since there's pretty much just the one instructor for their area, he's run into a lot of scheduling problems.  He's been stuck going weeks between lessons.  Also, he really doesn't have anyone to practice with on his own.

thank you! this is good to know--we don't plan on having a car for a few years but i'd love to go ahead and get the license out of the way!
