Vegetarian Fare????
« on: July 26, 2004, 01:39:20 PM »
I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how vegetarians fare in the UK.  I have heard that Britain is one of the most veggie friendly places to live, but was just wondering if anyone could give me some first hand experience.

I'm not a veggie now, but I was for over a year in the US, and I can say that in my mind it is much easier to stick to a veggie diet here in the UK.  Menus are clearly marked, food in the grocery store is clearly marked - and you don't get looked at funny if you order the veggie option for dinner!

Very easy and probably many other items which you've never seen in the US.  Quorn products are a wonderful meat substitue.  Makes it super easy to adapt recipes.

It's very very easy to be a vegetarian here.  You won't have any problems whatsoever.

I was amazed at all the products. I am not a vegetarian myself now, but one of my sons is vegan, so I have been looking around with him in mind. One thing I was amazed with is how many vegetarian restaurants there are around.

My DF is a vegetarian, and I have found it to be VERY easy to find foods for him...even ones that I, as a die-hard carnivore, enjoy.

As mentioned by others, there are a great deal of products (I really like Quorn) and there are a LOT of great places to eat.  We eat at Henderson's in Edinburgh quite a bit and really like it.

The coolest thing, however, is that many (if not MOST) of the products out there have a stylized V on the package somewhere to alert you to the fact that it is vegie-friendly.  You will generally find the V in the corner of the front side of the package...take a look and you'll see what I mean.

If the rest of the EU and the States would get on board with such a GREAT idea, I'm sure that there would be a few more people willing to go meat-free.

Good luck finding what you need, and remember that there are some terrific websites out there with yummy veggie recipes.

I have been veggie for 16 years - it is very easy here, loads of veggie convenience foods including ready meals in most supermarkets, you name it, they've got it.  also when eating out the vast majority if places offer several veggie options, even McDonalds has a Quorn buger!

UK is awesome for the Veggie health conscious!  I have found veggie cheese that has no horrible after-taste, which I could never find in the US!  There is even organic and veggie products at the open-air markets!

Oh it was AWESOME being a veggie in London! And as mentioned earlier, the "Suitable for Vegetarians" label was so helpful...instead of my usual having to look at every flippin' ingredient!  ::)

Now that I'm back in the US, I miss that a lot.  :-\\\\

From my very recent experience it is way, way easier to be vegetarian in the UK than in the United States! :D As mentioned all the products are clearly labelled with that fantastic blue 'v.' Eating out is lovely as well as there are so many good (and bad beware) Indian restuarants, veggie burgers at the chippie etc. My palate certainly finds England a much better vegetarian fare than the US---the only thing that kept me from gaining weight was all that walking I did to and from work and through out London lol! ;)

You are going to enjoy being vegetarian in the UK no doubt,
