Pre-lit Christmas trees
« on: October 10, 2009, 05:18:39 PM »
Hi there,
I recently moved over and bought with me my 6' pre-lit Christmas tree that I bought at Walmart last year. I intend to use it over here with a transformer but not being electrically minded I am not sure what rating transformer I need. The tree has 900 lights, can anybody advise me what transformer I need to buy?
Colin

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Hi,

More information is needed to work out the size of transformer necessary.

With 900 lights, I'm guessing this is one of those units where you can select different chasing, flashing, fading, and wave patterns and the lights are the little "grain of wheat" lamps or LEDs?

Look at the rating tag: If the controls are contained within the base and there's a cord which plugs directly into the 120V wall outlet, it will probably be somewhere on the side or bottom of the stand.  If there's a separate control unit for the electronics and it's powered from a "wall wart" cube, you'll find the ratings on the control unit and power supply.

The tag will specify the voltage (115, 117, or 120V) and either the current (in amps) or the power (in watts).

But it will depend upon the actual combined power rating of the lights you intend to run.  Over 100W and you will need a larger unit.

You must be right I recently put up my tree and switched on the lights and the transformer got too hot so I couldn't use it!
