american brother cant get car insurance for two weeks, help
« on: September 15, 2009, 10:50:16 AM »
hello, my brother is visiting from America, and we bought him a cheap car so he can visit all the family over here, but we cannot seem to get him temporary insurance for two weeks, the couple of insurers we were told could help will only insure 24 or 25 and over, my brothers 23, so he isn't able to get it, he's insured in the states, but obviously that's not applicable over here, is there any insurance company that any one knows of that would be able to help, as he won't be able to do all the visiting he had hoped, and the day trips he had planned to explore the UK won't be possible, surely there is a way of visitors to this country to be able to drive, please, any help would be greatly appreciated, sorry if this is posted on the wrong part of the forum, i am new to this site, also, my brother has found the food not what he's used to bless, its amazing just how different we do things over here, I'm going try and find an American style food place where he can eat the foods he's used to, lol. thanks for any help.

In the end it would have been most advantageous to research this before you actually bought the car and it probably would have been a better idea to hire him a car and pay for the insurance with the car hire. My husband hired a car for 14 days through our local Vauxhall dealer and it was only £175 including insurance and unlimited mileage. Our primary car insurance policy would have covered the hire car but my husband is a believer in 'the more coverage the better'.

If he's craving American food there are tons of US food outlets, McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Frankie & Benny's, TGI Friday's, Burger King...

That really is a shame. I had a quick google search but I'm afraid I couldn't come up with anything for visitors under 24. I would also recommend renting a car. I use Enterprise when I rent cars (can't afford to buy one yet).

Hope you can sort all this out.

do you not have insurance on the car?  i thought most insurance covered other drivers by default.  well at least with my parents policy it did.  i drove my parents car when I went home for 2 weeks.  i don't see an issue, chances of him getting into an accident is pretty slim, unless he's not use to roundabouts and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Some do, although it's not very common and even then it will probably only be third party.

Mind you there's no harm in spending 2 minutes checking the policy document on the off-chance.

I was a tad worried I'd crash my parent's SUV but they are giving it to me when I move back so that helped..

Your insurance might not cover additional drivers by default, but have you asked your insurer if any additional options can be added to your current policy?  My bf has a policy on his car that also covers any driver he allows to use the car, including me while I'm visiting.
