In the begining post of this thread, Lola asked if anyone was "living a lie". YES YES YES. Im sad to say. I wont go into details because my god its a long story (a lie spanning 7 years and running). Basically my family thinks I moved to the UK for work when actually I moved to get married. My family didnt even know I got married until a few months ago, and even still theyre 2 years behind schedule. They dont know I married Martin in 2002. They think we wed in 2004. (YIKES!)

We too met online. Before we were married we didnt really like to tell people that we'd met online because it had that stigma attached to it. But if people asked we told them the truth. Now that we're married I find it easier to say we met online.

Sarah

NOTE: I was 19 when I got married and it would have torn the family to shreds had they known - they were certain he was an axe murderer rapist because he was "online". Now that they've met him its a different story. My grandma even called him her "new grandson" recently. Amazing how things change.

My husband and I met online in July of 2000. All of my family knew how we met  - I never tried to keep it a secret. I figure it's my life, my chances, my pay-off :)    Besides, I've long ago realized I'm the rebel in the family. Everyone looks to me to do the "daring" thing.

Anyway, we met in July and I moved over here in October of 2000. When I got off the plane was the first time we'd actually seen each other face-to-face. We laugh about it now, but have always known, from the first conversation we had, that we were just "right" for each other.

I know I'm late - where's the booze?

Well, it's actually rather odd in my opinion how my sweetie and I met....
I was married at the time, and my hubby had bought me a computer, I just took off with it from there, went to the icq website and got on the chat engine from there. We met in a chatroom and instantly hated each other, he was annoying and I was just a downright rude b***h in return! :-\\\\
I soon became a regular chatter in this IRC chat engine and we eventually became friends, then in 2000 my marriage fell apart and I had my IRC friends, and family here of course, to fall on for support.
But I did disappear from the net for a year or so...when I came back, we had all basically matured some and ended up hitting it off this time around, it was great!!!  :D
Of course, it didn't happen then...it just couldn't...he was with the mother of his children....lol
Soooooo...as the story goes, he was with someone and they split, a friend of mine from New York was planning a trip to come and see me, and we decided to invite Karl with her on the trip....
He came, and that first night was awesome, we spent a couple hours outside talking, and he was so gentlemanly and asked if he could kiss me  [smiley=love.gif] from there on out we were inseparable...
The end of his 2 week visit was upon us and we decided we definately wanted to be together..but who was going to move? We both have young children, and didn't want to separate from them...
We decided he'd move, and then as the time neared for him to actually come over, the decision changed, sooo....I am going to move there, we're hopelessly in love, we've had sooo much positive time to bond via the net and telephone, that I feel our bond is that much stronger, most people don't have the advantage of building their bond as a couple in the communication department, and to learn about your partners kinks, preferences etc without the actual physical aspect being there too...it was so nice to be able to talk and air everything, THEN have the physical part of our relationship come into play too....
I happen to feel the internet was a good thing for me, because I found my soulmate, and even though there are some bumps in the road. (don't we all know this already!!!!)
So the story goes, he's returning to the states Aug 14th, we're getting married in international waters aboard the Lady Huron on the evening of Aug 17th, and honeymooning in Chicago, Illinois (our trip to the consulate to get my spousal visa, and my sons visa as well) and then flying to UK Aug 21st...here's to hoping the people at the consulate are in a good mood when we get there on Aug 18th  ;) That'd be the best wedding present ever, to have my visa approved :)

I don't think the internet has the stigma that it definitely did at one time. I met Jamie on kiss.com (the name is vaguely embarassing, I have to admit) when I had had a few too many pints with a friend and decided to post myself there. Jamie wrote me an email on 19 March, 2002 and my life suddenly and completely changed. He was in San Francisco by May so we could meet, I came over here three times in the following 10 months, and in September of this year I moved in with him! We're getting married in October. Both of our families and all of our friends know how we met and both have been very accepting of it (even though my parents are in their 70's and I don't think they truly "get" how it all works.) We never even considered keeping it a secret - figuring that if people didn't approve, they didn't approve. But I have to admit, whenever I tell the story to someone new, i always wonder what their reaction will be and hope that they don't pass judgement about it....  :-\\\\

My hubby and I met on line almost two years ago. I was on a dating site and he found me. We started emailing in Dec 2002. Starting talking on line then on the phone about a month later. We would talk for hours. One night it was a full 9 hour conversation. neither of us can remember what we talked about. Just stuff. Then in April 2003 he came to California to meet me and spent a week. We kind of just knew. I decided to get a second mortgage on my condo, and quit my job, and I came to England for 3 months, which turned into 4 months, in May 2003. Steve just wanted me to make sure I liked it here, and that his daughter and I got along. In August of 2003 Steve took me to Spain. We got engaged on the 3rd night there. In Sept I flew home to California and put my condo on the market. It took 5 months to sell. I finially got back here last February and we got married in April.
So there is my story. As far as telling people, I am not shy about it. So many people meet on line these days. When we went back to Spain in May we met this older British couple (retired couple) They were celebrating the anniversary of their first date 2 yrs ago and they met on line.

Just a thought for all us online couples ... do you think our kids are going to stress about telling us if they first meet their future spouse/partner in the flesh??

My step daughter is 9 and she gets a kick out of  the fact that we met on line.  A cartoon on telly stated that long distance relationships dont work. She laughed and said they do... look at you two.
