Registry advice for two grad students -- please help!

Hi everyone, my husband and I have already been legally married for two years (really long story due to my ethnic/family customs), but we're finally going to have a big reception/moving away party in September. We'll be grad students in London.

We don't really need many of the traditional registry items since we'll be moving so far and don't plan on living luxuriously for a while, but I'd like to offer something to those guests who are more comfortable giving us a gift. Therefore, we've considered registering on Amazon.com. It would be great to include things we'll need in the UK, like a good transformer or a suitcase, but I'm not sure if these are appropriate. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I registered at travelersjoy.com for a honeymoon registry. I think they are great and you get money in the end to apply to anything you want.

Hubby and I registered on amazon.co.uk and since we are still a bit unsure of where we are going to be in the long term, we asked for a lot of "unusual" things like a new digital camera, electric toothbrushes, suitcases, etc but almost all things that we could use now and also if we ended up moving back to the US someday. IMHO I feel like you should register for whatever you actually need and not worry about tradition.

In the end we mostly received gifts of money since our family and friends knew our situation and that it would be the easiest option for us. We enjoyed some of it on our honeymoon and the rest is in savings for a future home and paying for those darn visas. Someday when we can actually use it, we'll buy all that china we didn't register for
