Turnip Greens and/or Collards in or around Belfast?
« on: September 14, 2009, 11:03:24 AM »
I grew up in the Deep South (Alabama) and was practially fed turnip greens and collards since I was a baby.  So imagine my dismay when I move to Belfast and they're both no where to be found.  I've heard of "spring greens" which are akin to collards, but when I asked my local veg grocer, they said that all their turnips arrive with just the root.  Doesn't anyone keep the greens?  Does anyone know where I might be able to find these two dark leafy vegetables which are so delicious!?!?

There was a thread about this recently, and spring greens were the closest you could get. I love buying Beetroot with the tops on and cooking them up. Delish!

I buy them in Sainsburys and Tesco all the time.  Packaged as spring greens, by the bags of salad.

Thanks!  I'll try Sainsbury's sometime, but doubt they'll have them now that it's turning colder.  As for the beetroots, think I'll pass!  That's probably one of the only veggies that our family never served while growing up!

"Spring greens" are a variety of cabbage, and they seem to be available pretty much year-round. No idea how close they are to collards, but they are yummy.

You could try St George's market on Saturday morning. Another option might be to get in touch with one of the local box schemes--I used Helen's Bay when I was in Belfast--and ask them about turnip greens. I do wonder if turnip, beet, etc. greens ever make it past the slugs, based on what I've seen in my veg boxes... :P

I'll have to try the market!  Could always ask a farmer if he/she could bring me some of the tops if all they do is throw them away.

Regarding the slugs, I've never seen so many just wherever!  There was one in our sitting (living!!) room one night and I have NO idea how it got in!

Also, has anyone every seen any yellow crookneck squash (summer squash)???  Should I just check out the market every now and then to see what I can find?

You know, I don't remember ever seeing yellow squash. Hmm. The market is probably your best bet, but they don't actually have that much fresh veg. ::) There are also a couple of decent greengrocers on Lisburn Road (and elsewhere, I'm sure, that's just the neighborhood I know).
