Henry (2.5) is into John Deere tractors, so we're dressing him up as a "tractor driver", which basically means he's gonna be a farmer in overalls, plaid shirt, hanky in the pocket etc.

Philip (5.5) is being annoying persistent and specific about his costume, one that he decided on wearing the day after Halloween last year. He wants to be a train conductor, in an outfit the looks almost exactly like what Tom Hanks wears in the Polar Express (and also looks like the outfits the conductors on our local train line wear). Blue suits, shiny cap, etc.

Maybe do a search for a mid-20th century policeman's uniform?  Kinda like in Make Way For Ducklings?  That might steer you in the right direction.

Balmerhon, I saw this frog costume in my Etsy email today and thought of you.  The price is extortionate, but if you can copy the idea / pattern from the pictures that might work for a frog costume.   :-\\\\

Thanks everyone!!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I just bought a navy 5 pc suit for Philip to wear with a red tie, I;ll just attach gold buttons to the front and buy him a real conductors hat, then attach gold letters to the front. He'll look like a real Metra conductor, can't wait. :)
